I teach a pull-out class of 8 students. Their literacy levels are not up to par, hence the extra attention and coaching.
Even then, a huge disparity exists among them. While some students are still struggling to spell *how are you?”, their better-performing peers could be stretched to write complex sentences. But alas! in a classroom, where the students are clamouring for my attention like hungry koi fighting each other for fish feed, I tend to cater to the lowest common denominator. This is to say that I use the simplest English that everyone can manage.
Hence lies my teacher’s guilt. My best-performing student remains stagnant in her knowledge and skill level because I haven’t made a concerted effort to enhance her competency.
Yesterday, I finally found time to type my sample informal email on Magic School AI.
I then inputted the rubrics and made use of the Text Leveller feature. Within seconds, it delivered a more polished email that showcased some sophisticated vocabulary.
Don’t get me wrong. I could come up with the exemplar myself, but amidst the daily grind, where time is of the essence, I don’t always have the luxury to expend my cognitive power on writing sample emails. So, I’m grateful that Magic School AI helps ease my workload.
At the end of the day, my best-performing student made use of the exemplar to write something like this:
For comparison’s sake, this is the standard exhibited by my last-performing student:
Well, I am doing the best I can. xP
You should get them pen pals.

I’m busy just trying to get them to pass their final year exams haha

I see. They have some standardized tests they need to pass to get into high school?

Not this young. But I feel that the primary responsibility of a teacher is to get his students pass their exams. Otherwise, why teach?
