I think they technically brute force the file that contained the seed and not the wallet itself. Improperly secured seed does not constitute "cracking" the wallet. But hey, it sounds good and scary for the "bad guys".
Remember, always secure your seed... twelve (or 24) words in 12 (or 24) places.. :-)

yea likely they figured out his encryption password on the .dat .
