The New Yorker has always been the medium of upper-class protofascists, content in their well-off suburbian houses, without a care in the world what happens to the poor shlubs on the other side of the river or, even less, the other side of the world. You could always sell any fantasy to them, as long as it flatters their idea of superiority by wealth.

Also, historically, the stratum in which fascism starts to spread. It starts from corporations and industrialists, who need to defend their profit margins against falling rates of profit in an environment of social upheaval, where the libera facade no longer cuts it. It spreads through the well-to-do, who have everything to lose in social upheavals and will largely be loyal to rich people they'll never really be a part of. Ony then it collects the poorer parts of the population, usually by bribing them (which is what happened in Germany, when the "private army" established by the N-zi party was a way to earn money by paupers).
