Two options:
  1. The world has a significant chance of ending within your lifetime.
  2. The world is unlikely to end in your lifetime.
If option 1) is true then it doesn't matter what you invest in. Even shorter-term savings plans are pointless because you'll only be spending them on frivolities. You may as well invest long-term on the off chance that you're wrong.
If option 2) is true then obviously invest long-term.

well, in the afterlife you could at least look back at the wonderful frivolities you enjoyed?

Many don't believe in an afterlife, so couldn't factor that into their decision. For those that do believe, then wouldn't the afterlife be so great that you wouldn't care about the frivolities you enjoyed in your mortal life?
