For all the criticism we may levy at the Fed and its existence, a monetary spigot directly controlled by the executive is worse.

As much as one can critique governmental bodies, their utility, impartiality, efficacity... independence is important where 

 checks and balances make sure everything behaves well in a continuum without having to fear the whims of the executive.

Very important point.

As much as one can critique governmental bodies, their utility, impartiality, efficacity... independence is important where _proper_ checks and balances make sure everything behaves well in a continuum without having to fear the whims of the executive.
