The betting system they use is just a pool that gets divided up at the end. You should expect the odds to end up being fairly close to those in a sportsbook by the end.

Technically, no. You don't need to wager on every outcome to expect positive returns. All early bets have positive expected returns.
The reason I bet on every outcome, in those proportions, is because it limits the downside volatility.
