Maybe there are tiny 9-volt shaped cells inside each of those cylinders?

Probably each cylinders has 1.5 volts

Why a lie? It says 9V on the side, 6x1.5V=9V
Those are quad-A, you will notice AAA and AA batteries have 1.5V chemistry.
