As for online reaction videos, I guess there must have been a hugely popular influencer that started the game... maybe the videos of people playing computer games were some kind of precursor.

Anyhow, just a random musing.

Reaction videos became popular thanks to Japanese variety shows in the 1980s, where celebs reacted to clips Online, Fine Brothers' "React" channel in 2010 really made them a hit.
