I ended up going the Bitaxe route. It was really easy to set up and now I'm in the mining game.

I'm glad I started small, because even this little miner is pretty loud.

After a little research, I decided to join the OCEAN pool, because they allow custom block templates. I don't have the expertise to do that yet, but it seems important for decentralization to allow it. Let me know if you have any thoughts about the best pools.

Is it worthwhile to set up lightning payments? It sounded like a bit of a pain to do so. I'm assuming all the payouts are part of one transaction, since my share is much less than a transaction fee.

Since ACINQ pulled out of the US, you need to install the APK manually from here if you have Android. If you're using iOS, you can't install Phoenix in the US anymore afaik.

I wasn't clear on how this works. I still have the Phoenix wallet I downloaded before they pulled out of the US. Does it still work?

I haven't tried to use it since the announcement.

Yeah, it still works well. But be careful to not leave too much there. Also there are small sending fees in Phoenix

Yeah 0.4% + 4 sats can be a lot for small lightning payments. But zero fees for receiving over lightning.

Alby Hub is non-custodial. I don't know enough about the rest to say if it would work. OCEAN is only compatible with Bolt 12 lightning payments.

Ecash mints are custodial.

Alby Hub is a server you can run at home, so it's non-custodial in that sense, but you can connect it to an ecash backend. That way you don't have to run your own LN node and manage liquidity. Alby Hub acts as an interface with the mint, effectively disguising it as a LN node.

Nice! I have one as well. I have it linked with Braiins pool atm, but may transition eventually. Currently earning around 66 sats per day, but I understand that he payout if a block is hit is shared amongst the miners, so that's the downside of it. I'm still learning little by little with the time I have so at least I'm participating in some small part.

At the rate of 66 sats per day I will probably not join a pool, it's better to just go lottery mode outside of a pool, cross your fingers every 10 minutes and hope for the best, the downside of not making 66 sats per day is definitely offset by the upside in case you find a block.

Don't you have a node at home? Like an Umbrel, Start9, Raspiblitz, or whatever else.

You'll have the best performance and will become a true sovereign Bitcoiner if you do so. Maybe you even spot opportunities to build something that could help others have an easier time.

An added benefit of these nodes is that you can also self-host a bunch of cool stuff so you need to rely less and less on external parties.

I've been reading some people who completely abandoned the path of using these miniaturized nodes and are using PCs, old laptops, etc, to run their nodes instead. Both Umbrel and Start9 have their operating systems open souce, so you can just run them and get all the automation and benefits they pack out of the box.

So whatever works for you, but if you are a curious soul like me you'll want to give some of these "guys" a try, you'll enjoy and learn a lot in the process.

If the device works more than that, of course the fan will work quickly and will definitely make the fan sound quite noisy because it wastes heat on the device.

I'm sure it would be cheaper to just buy the sats. I wanted to start mining, because I want to help the network. Any sats I earn are a bonus.

There's also the slight offset to our heating costs, as these things run pretty hot, but that's also going to be pretty trivial.

I'm not sure how long yours took, but I ordered mine Dec 7th! It took them 5 business days to put a tracking number on it, and it's been slowly moving toward me since then.

I know what you mean about them being loud. I mean they are nothing, nothing compared to an S9 but you can replace the fan with a quieter one.

I had thought I would keep mine in the office but ended up putting it in my server rack.

It's in my office and I don't think it will really bother me, but I was surprised how loud it is.

I might try moving it out to the garage, at least for the winter. The colder environment might help performance, as long as the wifi is good enough out there.

True gamblers solo mine on Public Pool, go big or go home. I got my Bitaxe back in June, mined with Braiins pool for a few weeks but switched over to solo mining after that. I was getting about 49-50 sats per day during my time with Braiins. Report back on how many sats you get per day with Ocean?

I was receiving mining rewards via lightning by lnurl with Braiins. Also the payment threshold can be set if you don't want do receive payments everyday. I think I set it to 1000 sats.

I just went to Ocean's site and saw that they use BOLT12 offers for their lightning payments. To generate a BOLT12 offer, I think the most straight forward was is to have a lightning node running Core Lightning, as LND still don't support BOLT12.

I didn't find the fan that loud, but then again, I'm keeping my Bitaxe in the basement where we only got for laundry and console gaming.

If you don't have lightning payments setup, it will be a long time until you reach the on chain threshold. And even then, you have to deal with a small UTXO, which also sucks. I think if you're pool mining at home with very low hash rates, lightning payout is the only reasonable route.

You don't have to worry about lightning payments if you go solo, as 3.125+block fees btc is a big fat UTXO and probably won't be able to be routed over the lightning network. If you ever solo mine a block, I think you can only receive the reward on chain.

Even if you have enough inbound liquidity, you probably wouldn't be able to find a route. We're talking over 312.5 million sats. Typical channel sizes are a few to tens of million sats.

Also, I don't even think the protocol allows for lightning payments when solo mining. Coinbase transactions (the block reward tx, nothing to do with the exchange) are always done on chain.

I am using ocean also because it seems like the best pool for decentralized Bitcoin. Have been for months and I can say that they do end up paying more with patience. You may need to set up lightning if your hash rate is pretty small. It will take a long time to reach the limit for a deposit into your on chain account. What is your hashrate? I am running 480 THs for 10 hours a day and it still takes months to get an on chain payout. I haven't set up lightning yet.

I am not sure how it works exactly. I just know it takes me a while. Mine would be a lot quicker if I was running 24/7 like I am sure you are. I am subject to sunlight and batteries.

Yes, may be. However the situation over safety and security has improved a lot in my part of the world but there are still thieves and Dacoits who break into houses or shops forcefully. This is still at play in vilages here. I have a perfect spot to start a small mining farm, but need to wait till I can be sure about safety of my money.
