I think it depends on how clean everyone is. 
And if there is a janitor that cleans them?
In theory, it is just a place to sleep. 
You arent doing much there.

Hostels lack the prestige of Motel 6. 

Single room occupancy is fine if you are in college or early 20s.

Shared bathroom is a dealbreaker for me.  I don't like sharing a bathroom with family lol
