I found this little gem from Mechanic on a recent Bitcoin Audible Pod. I had no idea you could do this, and I'm surprised with all the recent Bitaxe popularity that it isn't talked about more.
The topic goes for about 5 minutes from 52:40. He talks about how you can adjust the network difficulty with DATUM (building your own blocks with Ocean) to basically get a higher reward that has a lower probability target.
On one side of the pendulum solo mining for the jackpot is extremely rare. On the other side a small home miner earns you just a few sats a day. You make more sats from saying GM on nostr honestly! So why not pick somewhere in between by adjusting the network difficulty to aim for a higher payout that happens less often?
I might try this with my nerdaxe (500GH/s) to find something in the range of once a month or every 2 weeks just to see what happens. At the moment whenever Ocean finds a block I get around 30 sats.
I'm interested to know if anyone on SN is doing this and if they have any other advice or opinions on doing this.

You will have to ask @Undisciplined. I know he was talking about this subject earlier.

I just started. That's a bit above my paygrade, at this point.

I thought you were talking about this same subject?
reply
Not quite. He's talking about actually using custom block templates, which I have no idea how to do.
I was saying that I chose Ocean because it supports that ability. I think it's important for miners to have that option, but for now it's beyond my ability.

I was exploring Umbrel's app store as I want to play and experiment with various applications they have available, one of them is Datum which allows you to create your own block template as @Undisciplined suggested.
I need elp to fully understand what he meant frens. It makes sense you can make it harder for you to find the shares and then you are rewarded proportional to that difficulty when you find a nonce above that difficulty, but that narrows this to pools where miners are rewarded proportional to their hashrate.
I hope that's correct, if so good 🎉, in any case the second and most important part of my doubt is regarding CK pool which has a high difficulty port "for miners that require a high difficulty, such as mining rentals".
Why would anyone use that?
The more I know, I don't know 😅

I see. Oh, did you make your first sat from mining yet?
reply
Sort of. Ocean has found several blocks since I started and I've earned a few hundred sats. That hasn't risen to the payout threshold yet, though, so I haven't received them yet. If I set up lightning payments, then I would receive them in real time.

What is the payout threshold on Ocean?
reply
I don't actually know. It wasn't obviously posted anywhere on their site and I didn't put more effort into finding it than that.
I got the impression from other stackers that it's 1k.
Congrats! You have skin in the game now. Not that you didnt before lol

I'm actually impressed how fast @Undisciplined is learning given I read on other posts him saying he is new to the community, and then he drops a "he's talking about actually using custom block templates".
That observation can only be made because the rabbit hole got him hard 😂
I've mined with Brains, Ocean, and Solo Ck.
I'm probably done with brains overall, although mining to a lightning address was nice.
Building my own template or solo mining is the obvious move, especially since ocean and coinOS support Bolt12.

I tried LN payouts with Phoenix bolt12 offers but they are apparently incompatible at the moment.
Bolt12 on coinos has a much shorter string than Phoenix (not sure why) so I might try and see if it works over the weekend.
