This is a (mini) trip report from spending... a few days in Lugano, Switzerland. My purpose in traveling there was to evaluate... how practical is it to actually spend Bitcoin on goods and services (what it's designed for), what the technical challenges are in such spending, and finally how do the staff and employees respond to using Bitcoin?
Do they know what to do, or do they just looked confused and/or not sure?
And I am happy to report that Bitcoin in Lugano is fantastic. I would estimate that 40% of the businesses in Lugano accept Bitcoin (hotels, restaurants, shops, merchants, clothing stores etc) and the employees know how to process it!
My goal in spending Bitcoin was to separate Truth from Fiction - how does Lightning actually work in the 'Real World'?
  • Would my transactions (ranging from a few francs to a few hundred) actually go through or would they fail?
  • Would I be able to use my own node smoothly and easily? (Answer is YES)
  • And finally would the experience have a positive or negative effect on my outlook on Bitcoin overall? (Answer very positive)
Where I live (and in fact 99% of the places I've been to) being able to spend Bitcoin is extremely rare. What is it like to use Lightning on Coffee and Pizza? Answer: It's really good.

My setup: My own LND Lightning node running on an out-of-the-box Umbrel. No fancy programming, use of Command-Line, no troubleshooting... just a few BTC sessions tutorials and I was up and running.
The App: Zeus Wallet (which I used exclusively) connected to my own node exclusively over tor. Everything was paid/transacted with using my own node + channels I opened. I learned how to use Zeus (it's pretty self-explanatory) watching BTC Session's videos and reading 1-2 of DarthCoin's guides.
  • No custodial usage. No custodial accounts. No 'permissioned' access... just an LND node + Umbrel + Zeus on a phone that's all I needed.
  • Overall the experience was flawless, all my transactions processed for... around (.1)-(.3)% in transaction fees and none of them failed.
  • I only made around a half-dozen transactions (for a number of reasons) but none of them failed, I was able to pay from my own Lightning Node (a big deal) and I didn't have to worry about converting currency, Francs to Euros to Dollars or paying "exchange fees" which are high... Bitcoin is universal everywhere.
  • Transaction amounts ranged from a few francs (for a coffee) to around a few hundred (a hotel stay) and everything just... went through.
  • The employees I interacted with didn't understand Bitcoin (from what I could tell) and most of them said that Bitcoin transactions were... uncommon. 1 or 2 a month maybe. However the payment device they used was very easy for them - they just selected USDT (which I'll get to in a moment) OR 'crypto' and after selecting 'crypto' (one of the 2 options USDT/Bitcoin) they input the amount in Francs and a QR code appeared for me to pay.
I would scan it with Zeus and pay that's it.
  • A really positive feature about using Lightning (aside from the monetary properties of Bitcoin) was just how universal it is. I didn't have to convert Euros to Francs... or worse Dollars to Euros to Francs while traveling (and pay high conversion fees). Lightning fees were around (.1)% way way less than a credit card.
  • The Lightning transactions took up to perhaps 20 seconds to show on both ends (sender and receiver) because I was on cellular + TOR using a node on another continent??? But after that there was no waiting for settlement. I paid and the business received their funds there was no waiting for credit card settlement which can take days. Why more businesses don't immediately jump on this... is beyond me Lightning worked really well.

Challenges? Yes a few but they were minor.
  • Connecting to my own node over Tor on another continent using a cellular connection... required sometimes 30 seconds. 30 seconds to open the Zeus app the first time. Then once it was open it was OK but I wanted to open the Zeus app a little bit before using it so it would be already open when I approached the payment teller.
  • One of my transactions used AMP (atomic multi-path-payments) which was OK... however I didn't want it to by default. I would have preferred it just use that particular Channel (big enough to pay for a hotel stay/150 Francs) without drawing from other channels too... but I don't see this as a big deal.
  • User interface and simplicity is still improving, and even as someone whose hobby is Lightning and Bitcoin I am still learning every day.
  • Tether which I have never owned, used, or transacted with in any way whatsoever was another payment option advertised many places in Lugano. My understanding is that Tether has offices there which... explains that. Having said that it might be confusing for 'normies'... Bitcoin and Tether have nothing in common and long-term it is not a great solution to see them side-by-side although I understand why Tether has appeal (trading platforms + developing/3rd world economies access to dollars).

Overall, I wanted to visit Lugano to Spend Bitcoin on Lightning to separate Truth from Bullshit. There is quite a bit of 'black-pilling' and... negativity towards Lightning.
  • Definitely from the ****coiners.
  • But from some Bitcoin developers too.
About me: I am a regular, middle-class pleb. I am NOT an OG or wealthy Bitcoiner, nor am I a software developer or software-engineer by education. Nothing like that at all.
But I managed to figure out Umbrel (plug and play basically) and enough LND and Zeus to pay for everyday-goods-and-services using my own Lightning node on another continent over TOR.
  • Isn't that the point of Lightning, to bring Bitcoin to layers and be fast and cheap?
  • Isn't using your 'own node' sovereign and decentralized?
  • And if I can figure this out (mostly watching Youtube) can't other people as well?
  • Lightning's transaction fees are a percentage of those with a credit card. Lightning worked (for me at least) day and night without any failures... and I didn't have to exchange Euros for Francs or Francs for Dollars. The Sats worked the same anywhere in Europe, the US, or online and it's just... more efficient and private in my experience.
Isn't this a better version of the future?
After visiting Lugano we stayed a few days in another European country (a cold one) and I was able to buy coffee again with Lightning... It went through and the fees were negligible (~.1%) and really fun.
In my opinion Lightning plus Bitcoin feels like a really powerful monetary package... and I don't see how other currencies much less altcoins can possibly compete while offering the same level of proof of work (they don't) much less decentralization (they aren't).
Thanks.
Love these "boots on the ground" reports. Thanks.

Thanks for sharing this! I feel like I need to do something similar to solidify my belief in a LN as the killer MoE.
Interested to know if you had a backup LN wallet just in case Zeus or your node wasn't working. I use Phoenix, Electrum, and Zeus but sometimes the payment fails so I switch to another LN wallet.
reply
I had 3-5 channels open with big 'hubs' (see the mempool.space Lightning-connectivity rankings) and I didn't have any issues.
Having said that... I brought a blockstream-greenlight-enabled wallet too just for backup but didn't need it.

Awesome to see more trip reports!

Great story. Almost every detail was relevant or interesting. Impressive setup especially with Tor
I assumed you are a software engineer
reply
No sir no software-engineer here. Umbrel + LND plug and play. Zeus wallet is great (it's at the top of DarthCoin's lightning-wallet stairs meme)
Scanning a real-world QR code felt exactly the same as scanning a Stacker News one... just in meatspace/a cafe.

Thanks for the report!
Are things inflated in Lugano because the businesses are using the Lightning Network?
reply
Things run expensive in Switzerland to begin with. However you get what you pay for in my opinion.
There aren't enough Lightning users to effect Lugano's prices
reply
nice, i saw Joe Nakomoto's video on Lugano and thought it looked very nice.
in fact, i have an acquaintance who works in Switzerland and he posted a pic there recently and i immediately took notice as i now associate it with btc (sadly said acquaintance is a shitcoiner degenerate and the btc aspect may have been lost on him )
reply
I went to Lugano to figure out the truth... how well does Lightning work in the non-stacker 'real' world. Honestly I was pleasantly suprised.
reply
Now imagine this without Tor :)

AMAZING TESTIMONY!
Do you have some video examples to post on my collection? https://darth-coin.github.io/merchants/bitcoin-lightning-payments-irl-en.html
reply
video no unfortunately. i do have testimony though... and i can say that btcmap is very accurate if under-reporting lightning acceptance in lugano.
i also have receipts though i would prefer not to post for privacy reasons. also i can say non-kyc is available in lugano if you know where to look
reply
Is not about to show that you really paid... is about to show the rest of the world how you did it and that is `possible. Unfortunately many still don't believe it and that's why I created that collection.
I use that article with examples to onboard more "nocoiners" and "non-believers"... if you do not show them real examples they are still living in their cage.

Amazing article! Thank you for sharing 🙏🏻

What a cool read! Buying coffee with Sats through LN would be so cool.
reply
using TOR for paying a coffee on a free country is kind of overkill don't you think?
in any case, thanks for sharing, love this travel experiences.

It’s cool it is possible.

yeah, for sure, i would love to see more of this.

Now this is what I’m talking about! So exciting, thanks for sharing. What’s next?
reply
anywhere in Europe with a large cluster of 'dots' and numbers on btc-map. in my experience Europe is light-years ahead of the US in Bitcoin-acceptance for goods/services.
reply
too expensive
reply
Without trying to use Lightning... there is no way to know how well it works. I am drinking a lightning-coffee right now in fact and it works fine.
reply
I didn't say Ln does not work, it works great. I meant that Lugano is a very expensive city.
reply
It is. However I highly recommend it as a place for Bitcoiners to visit and spend some sats.
reply
spend is an ugly word my friend
reply
May I ask why? I have never sold a single sat not one. However I have proved to myself that Bitcoin is a practical day-to-day transaction medium.
reply
I am total in favor in living only on sats, even if sometimes it means having to sell some for cash, but I try to but more than spending or selling. Spending is an ugly word when you learn about austrian economics and time preference.
reply
Thanks. I only spent what I reasonably would have anyway (in fiat etc). In my opinion if you earn more than you spend you save in Bitcoin. If you spend more than you earn... you will have a deficit at the end of the month Bitcoin or no.
I don't think Bitcoin fundamentally changes this
My condolescenses to your sats, ex-sats lol

LOL indeed. Sleep better at night tho

They're not. I took the pictures myself (the live indication in the top-left is apple's 'live' image mode) and it is from a screenshot. I would prefer not to for privacy purposes.
However the BTCMap is very accurate, in fact there are cafes that take lightning not on the map.

I took the funicular several times. There wasn't an option to pay for swiss transportation... with Lightning otherwise I would have.
There are however more ways to buy non-kyc with a phone number in train stations in switzerland
