I have used many tools that I got "for free" from the internet and every time I see I got something pretty handy I always want to give some back. I really believe FOSS is the way but we all know nothing is ever free, that's the second law of thermodynamics in layman terms.
Here is a list of apps, sites and software that I got "for free" and I really recommend. I tried to give something back, BTC of course, but it was not possible.
- LibreOffice was the latest, last time I opened I got the button donate which I immediately clicked, but no BTC to be found.
- Privacy Guides is a great site with cool info on tools and recommendations to enhance your privacy. I wrote to the contact for donations and ended up on Magicgrants who accepts BTC but only onchain.
- Spliit is the FOSS version of Splitwise. I wrote to that guy to send him some sats but can't remember what happened.
- CalyxOS is what I use on my phone, tried to send them some sats for the great work they do but sill not possible to donate with LN.
- The pirate bay is still a great reference for any TV series or movie you're looking for. They do take BTC but through a single onchain address.
- Louis CK I had a nice laugh with one of his shows that I downloaded from the the bay lol. I wrote to him saying what I did and that I wanted to send him some sats because I don't use credit cards or banks. Let's see if it baits.
Ok I must say that I use a lot other things "for free" where they actually take LN donations, but most of these are directly related to BTC (BTCPayServer, Zeus wallet, good'ole @DarthCoin guides etc. ) so in a way they don't count. I do send them sats from time to time, also I sometimes visit Geyserfund an throw some sats here and there. But this post is about the ones who I still cannot zap.
I have written to all of the above asking them if I could send some sats for donations, I really want to give back! But it still is pretty uncommon to have an LNURL or something like it to zap some sats. I believe FOSS would be quite viable if most people donated a few thousands sats. It's sad when some nice service stops because some lack of funding.
My invitation is to write to your own favorite "free" services and ask them to receive LN donations, maybe they will see there's an audience and do the work to accept it.
