So basically like Briar but with bitcoin integration.
They might be reinventing the wheel here. There are already good solutions out there: Jami has been around for a while and also Manyverse/SSB has not only p2p chat but also a fully fledged social network.
Adding yet another messaging app to the mix will only help in further fracturing the user base.
Are the devs aware of this other prior projects or is this another case of Not-Invented-Here syndrome? Why not collaborate with them instead of duplicating efforts?
The web3 world is also spawning a new decentralized chat platform every month, seemingly ignoring all previous works on the subject.
I think the idea was more for it to serve as a testing ground for Holepunch (while also being a useful tool for bitfinex) more than it being a goal by itself.
There is already a fractured user base (with the exception of a couple large ones) in the messaging app world so that ship has sailed. I think now more competition could be a good thing as we need a substantial improvement over the current dominant players if we want to overcome their network effects.
