I find the distinction between -ology and -onomy endings wanton.

For instance:

  • Astronomy: scientific study of stars
  • Astrology: occult/religious study of stars

Compared with

  • Gastroenterology (sometimes shortened to Gastrology): scientific study of your guts
  • Gastronomy: occult/religious study of your guts (at least this is how good food hits me)
