Now, the Mavs are Kyrie and a bunch of centers, while the Lakers are two awesome point-forwards who don't play defense.

Some context. Sounds like Mavs don't want to commit to a super max on Luka for 5 years because they think he doesn't play defense and he gets fat. Let's see how this plays out. Maybe it will become the motivation that pushes Luka to play defense and stay fit.

I agree they should have shopped around. Maybe they did shop around and we just don't know about it. Maybe the other teams either don't want to trade their franchise player or are unable/unwilling to give the Mavs what they asked for. But 1 first round pick for Luka is quite preposterous.

I can't imagine they were shopping Luka without it leaking to the media. What I'm hearing this morning is that Dallas basically went straight to the Lakers (not even the other way around!) and asked if they were interested in Luka.

Maybe they know that Luka's about to retire and this is a major F-you to the Lakers. I really can't make sense of this.

Maybe that was the point, that they wanted it done quick and behind closed doors. Luka is loved in Dallas and Luka loves Dallas too. I would imagine the push back from fans will be so great that they might try to make it impossible for management to move Luka. So they had to make the deal quick and done, hence no shopping around, no leaks to the public until it's too late.
