pull down to refresh

My son has been sick for almost a week. My wife got sick next and then yesterday my daughter's defenses fell.
I powered through my Health and Fitness challenge yesterday but was feeling quite tired last night and sure enough this morning I woke up with a scratchy throat, headache and mild cough. I am hoping my immune system can repel this viral onslaught but not looking good at the moment.
What should I do? Load up on vitamin C and sleep or load up on water, get on the exercise bike and try to sweat it out?
I have a project to do for my contract job later in the week. Fortunately, I can spread it out over a few days, so it shouldn't be too bad, but if I can manage to not be feeling like crap it would be great.
I await your wisdom and insights.
Let's go Health and Fitness!

Sick of what? You didn't mention the actual cause. If it's viral cold and cough, I'd suggest you take Masala Tea you all will be fine. This has worked for me almost always.

Go for masala chai, it is a wonderful medicine. If you've an Ayurveda shop, you can also get a cough syrup, goes by the name "Shwasari Pravahi", if you take it once a year, you'll be immune to such mild sickness. I do it since my childhood. My father used to give me. I never had these problems.

Take honey. Vit. C is good, but it's a myth that it will cure your sickness faster. Your body is already fighting, and you will all get better soon.
Load up on vitamin C and sleep or load up on water, get on the exercise bike and try to sweat it out?
I think resting is a lot better for now, but doing some light exercises is also good, and yes, please stay hydrated.
reply
@Undisciplined also recommended honey.

Yeah, I just saw it. Well, he is a polymath person who knows everything. Whenever I post something in the ~Healthandfitness territory, I always wait for his views as they are always correct.

Are you sure we are talking about the same person? Haha

We drink a concoction of honey, lemon, hot water and a dash of whiskey for colds and sore throats. My wife is going through this right now.
I would also suggest about 20,000IU of D3 throughout the day with some K2 to help it out. D3 is what most people are missing in the winter and when the chemtrails get strong.

I am drinking honey lemon tea right now. I don't drink alcohol so no whiskey for me but thanks for the recommendation.
reply
I don’t drink it with whiskey, either. I quit drinking alcohol a long time ago. I only drink it when required to by custom. The honey, lemon, hot water or tea will do just fine, too.

Turmeric milk might help, along with drinking plenty of water, as well as ginger and peppermint teas. Get well soon.
reply
Thanks. Never tried tumeric milk.

Did your son get sick from school? I have always found loading the bed with blankets and sweating it out to work. Or go to a wet sauna if you know of one near you.
reply
No my kids are homeschooled. I think it was from a church event my wife took the kids to last week.

I swear the sauna works, but you have to know what kind of sickness you have.

Eating CARNIVORE makes colds much less of an issue.
I used to regularly get colds, and in the past couple decades they were worse than they were when I was younger.
Younger me - get a cold, but it was basically a stuffy nose/sore throat/cough, and had almost the same amount of energy.
Older me - get a cold, get the same stuffy nose/sore throat/cough, but then I'd also feel very low energy. I might even go to bed for a day or two, or three.
Now - 14 months or so into a carnivore diet - I'm back to the "younger me" version of a cold. The last cold I got was last summer, I was on a long distance bike tour. I noticed a bit of a sore throat and stuffiness, but I kept on biking without any problems.
Lots of people doing carnivore have had this experience. It's great for the immune system, as well as the rest of your body.

Interesting. I feel you on the younger me, older me assessment.

Vitamin C and sleep. Maybe drugs for symptom relief. You can try sweating it out, you may even feel better afterwards, but it pushes all the by-products of illness AND exercise through your lymphatic system and it will hit you again…
Hope you feel better soon.
Usual caveats apply - I am an expert, but I am not your expert :D

Maybe a hybrid approach. I can sweat it a little and then later get some honey lemon tea and take a nap. The sweating it out part really sounds like a lot of work right now which is why I haven't commenced this experiment.
reply
Maybe. It might make you feel a little brighter but I wouldn’t expect to shorten the illness half-life..
reply
I have always liked keeping busy while sick instead of sitting around thinking about it.
reply
I don't like the sweat it out idea. Is that something you've had success with?
I vote for drink tons of OJ and hot tea w/honey and get lots of rest. That's how I usually approach being sick.
reply
It did work for me a couple times but I was much younger. I would drink absurd amounts of water and then work out and sweat like crazy and I usually felt better. In recent years I just whined about being sick and just dealt with it but I think it is early enough that maybe I can nip it in the bud. Maybe.

Powah to ya.
I'm pretty out of it today as well. Muscle ache (reminds me of rona years ago) and very weak, tired and sluggish.
We will seeee how this impacts the workout:(
