8 days ago I forked stacker.news (#879762) and set two goals for myself: find a good first issue to contribute towards and learn more about the analytics stack. I'm very happy (and pleasantly surprised) that I actually managed to accomplish both goals! Though I did more than the 1-2 hours a week I initially said I would. But it was a fun learning experience and that's what matters. Not having worked with javascript or next.js before, I leveraged ChatGPT a lot to help me understand the codebase.

I mentioned that I'm mostly interested in building out the analytics platform. So with that being said, I want to solicit stackers' opinions:

What sorts of charts or other analytics about stacker.news would you like to see? What sorts of charts or other analytics about stacker.news would you like to see?

One statistic I always thought would be cool is sats stacked per word, to get a feel for how much it pays to write on stacker.news relative to standard pay rates for freelance writers.

The main thing I'd like is just having the same analytics broken out by territory, including our personal stats.

Will be great if it could be public! Or you were thinking just for territory founders?

reply

No, I want it to be public. I was pretty much just thinking that the analytics page could let you pick territory the same way you can pick the timeframe.

reply

That was my interpretation as well

🤯

Yeah this would be great

Super easy one: how many times an item has been viewed.

And for how long has the user stayed on page, or avrg-reading-time-per-user vs reading-time

I want to see how many stackers are active on the website at a time

reply

… and from which region/country. Yeah ok, with VPN these days this info does not matter much. Just curiosity though

I would love to be able to see some information about mutes.

  • How many muted stackers are there?
  • Similarly, how many outlawed stackers are there?
  • How many muted territories?
  • How many mutes does each territory have?
