The secret from lesson one is abstract (see comment in this post).
So it looks like your original guess about needing to do the lessons was right then.

But there's no obvious hint, besides the indication that the author expected someone to try this (playing Johnny)

Yes, briefly. Notified the puzzle author and asked if this was part of the puzzle. Left a link to this SN thread. They replied in #908967 and changed the password.

I still don't understand whether accessing the mail was crusial part of the solution or it was just a coincidence and nothing to do with the puzzle 🧩

No, it was not related to the puzzle.
The current situation is that we have a KeePass database file called whatisthepassphrase.kdbx (see #908590 for how to download it yourself) but don't know the passphrase to open it.
