I took a five day boy's (old men) trip with some friends, without thinking much about my nodes. They are low maintenance and work seamlessly 95 percent of the time.

While I was away, my wife was having trouble with a ceiling fan. She mistakenly started turning off circuit breakers, thinking it was an electrical issue. It wasn't. As a result, halfway across the US my SN zaps were failing. Lessons I have learned:

  1. Don't Let Women Near Circuit Breakers

This is a not very funny joke. My wife is more competent fixing stuff around the house than me.

  1. Don't Forget To Check Your UPS Frequently.

Mine failed. I have had this problem before, but never seem to learn this lesson.

  1. Umbrel nodes do not seem to require a new log in after loss of power. Mine was up and running a few minutes after the power was restored.
  2. Start 9 nodes are different. Mine needed a fresh log in, so my node was down for a few days.
  3. Alby Hub needs a new log in after a power failure, and its NWC connections permanently failed after power returned. I could not send or receive sats on SN until I returned home, deleted my old SN NWC connections, and created new ones. I learned all about the world of cowboy credits in the interim.

/cc @Alby

Takeaway for us: we need to make it easier to add backups. We currently only support one type of wallet at a time, so you can't add another NWC without removing the existing one.

How was Vegas?

Did you catch another show at the Sphere?

reply

That's our whole purpose. We're obsessed. 3 nights in a row! Amazing thing about dead shows. We never heard the same song twice.

reply

Awesome.

I have a theory that learning which switch does what is a distinctly male ability. After years living in the same house, and spending more time in it than I do, my wife still has no idea which switch turns on which lights or fans.

are they not labeled?

edit: oh, you also mean normal switches, not just circuit breaker switches

reply

Yeah, I haven't mapped out our circuit breaker switches either. It comes up so infrequently, but the previous owners did manage to mislabel them, so it will need to be done eventually.

reply

Mine are labelled well, because we live in an area where we used to lose power every big storm. We have a whole house generator, but we used to have a small honda that would just keep power to the well and refrigerator/freezer. That's also why I always had a battery backup for bitcoin stuff. I blew it this time.

reply

I’ve had similar experiences. It seems every time I go out of town, one of my miners needs a reboot for some reason. Almost without fail. I need some remote control setups so I can manage them away from home

reply

Yes. Avalon does have the app,, but I'm not sure if that would provide much help. It had lost its connection to my miner when I was away this time, but the miner stayed online.

reply

Oof. These are good lessons to know.

(Also, for #1, label those circuits! Unless the fan was on the same one as your machines, in which case it didn't matter.)

reply

They are labelled, and yes, they're on the same circuit!

reply

D'oh! Can't do much to avoid it then, I guess.

Perhaps consider a coinos custodial LN wallet as a backup to Alby for any situation where your self custody node/s are out of action? Running and maintaining a node and full self custody LN wallet has proven too complex technically for me so coinos wallet does the job and enables LN liquidity and reliability.

reply

Yes, I can see your point. I have been running one of my nodes for 3 1/2 years and it has been reliable. I blame myself for not checking my UPS before I left. I do think setting up backup wallet connections is important. I know @ek mentioned that earlier.

reply

My modem, router, and Bitcoin node are all connected to a backup battery exactly for situations like this. The battery plugs into the wall, and the devices plug into the battery.

reply

I know. That's what I meant by a UPS. The battery must have died. I didn't test it for maybe 3 years. Dumb on my part

reply

What is a UPS?

reply

Uninterruptible power supply. Really a surge protector with a battery, at least in my layman opinion.

Im sure you had some CCs from me that you could have used. I am curious, what is your fraction of sats to ccs?

reply

I'm honestly the wrong guy to ask. I never notice. Right now I have a tiny amount of cc's. I zapped most of the away when I didn't have an attached wallet. I don't really pay attention, but cc's seem only a tiny fraction of my total usually.

reply

Women generally don't like (and don't understand) technical things. Not all of them (with respect to the exceptions), but most of them can't click back on a safety pin. But that's okay...they weren't "made" for that.

I believe whether a raspi auto restarts depends on housing solution. But more crucial, sudden loss of power can corrupt LN and/or bitcoind database.

You are such a reflective person, always drawing lessons from your experiences.

Hope you managed to enjoy yourself with your chums despite the mishap!

reply

This is a circuit breaker, right?

Well the joke is 100% legit, it's only that you can't pass it on to your wife. 😂
