These are two short stories written by Will Schoellkopf, our very own shameless uptail woof woof, @realBitcoinDog, here on Stacker.News. They were published, respectively, in Tales from the Timechain and Financial Fallout. Both are collections of bitcoin-related stories, under the 21 Futures umbrella.
Warning: The reviews may contain direct and indirect spoilers, so don't read on if you want to experience them fresh!
Who Let the Bitcoin Dogs Out
This is a playful story about John and Lily, American and British agents, and their attempt to foil the plot of a French terrorist named Macaron who has kidnapped a bunch of English Border Collies and is holding them for ransom. Although the story is clearly comedic, it explores themes of power projection in a Bitcoin standard world, where countries wield power over each other with hash rate rather than with missiles and bombs. It's a fun tale that mixes RBD's penchant for dogs and bitcoin.
Self-Immolation to Self Custody
This is a more serious, dystopian tale about a father's desire to help pay for his daughter's wedding, but is unable to withdraw his money from the bank. The theme here is very clear: with the traditional banking system, you aren't in control of your own money. How does the father react? What's the solution? You'll have to read the story to find out. This story demonstrates RBD's range as a writer, as the style and tone is completely different from Who Let the Bitcoin Dogs Out.
In terms of constructive feedback, I had a bit of trouble reading the stories at first, because some sentences felt a bit long and meandering. But when I slowed down my pace of reading, and read the sentences in the deliberate cadence of a storyteller, it worked better. Just a thought in regards to style.
There are many other short stories included in these collections. I've only read a few of them, but I've enjoyed what I've read. Well worth picking up if you're a fan of science fiction and want to support more bitcoin-related stories.
