I really enjoy listening to non-technical people talk about technology when they get the bigger picture impacts and how it relates to our humanity.
I was reminded of this video by @k00b's post about an AI generated video of a victim forgiving his killer.
Piper says, "Computers are better at words than you. Than I". But they are machines. They cannot feel. They cannot have emotion.
This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me
~ Matthew 15:8
Most of us hate it when people are fake with us. When they say things they don't mean. When they say things just to get something they want from us. Yet, we are quickly falling into this same trap with technology. Accepting it as real and human. I'm not suggesting we can't use technology but we have to be careful that we do not fall into this mechanical trap and forget what makes humans special.
We are emotional and spiritual beings. Though AI didn't exist during the times Jesus walked the earth read the verse above in a broader context.
Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat.” He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or his mother, “What you would have gained from me is given to God,” he need not honor his father.’ So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God. You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said:
“‘This people honors me with their lips,
but their heart is far from me;
in vain do they worship me,
teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’”
Empty words. Words without meaning because they are not from a pure desire and love. You may not be a Christian but don't miss the significance of this. There is a value in being real. Sharing true emotion and heart. Don't fall into the trap of the culture of lies that surrounds us. I would rather hear true words with mistakes and less eloquence any day over something fake. I would rather share a real moment with the ones I love than a million fake moments. Embrace the messy imperfect but real world.
There are already pastors creating AI versions of themselves to "disciple their flock" via chatbot. It's sad, and I can't imagine the kind of person who thinks that that's ok.

This wouldn't surprise me and its terrible. As a follower of Christ it seems to me that we have become far to influenced by the world around us instead of being the influence. Many might agree with that statement but I probably mean it in a much more broad sense than most. Things like this, the way churches are operated more like businesses. They ways the churches have subjugated themselves to governments in areas of charity and community. We need to wake up and realize that we are supposed to be the salt of the earth. Not a bland version of it that chases its approval.

Well, you're preaching to the choir with me.
Easier said than done though. Most people are not willing to listen to conversations about religion anymore.

What about people in your church?
reply
Meaning whether they're willing to talk about religion, or whether they are the salt of the earth?
For the former, there aren't really problems. My church is actually full of bible nerds. As to whether we're going out and making disciples of all nations, that is a bit harder to say... I think we want to, but as I said, it's difficult when most people outside church don't want to talk about this stuff.

I think the larger problem in US culture has been the attack on our history. I read How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization and I thought I was pretty knowledgeable on the topic. I wasn't. We've been programmed to have a disdane for our history. There were many mistakes but we don't really learn where a lot of the good came from. Men of faith are largely responsible for this world we love.
Since reading this book I've been digging into church history with an open mind and a desire to find common ground. I have been massively encouraged and it's driven home a desire to see the church live out loving one another more. Christians have to get better at disagreeing and online communication. We are behaving in ways that are destructive.

Trying to live it out and encourage it in my circles.

I think it's best not to look to online personas for Christ-like conduct (although some manage it.) The economic incentives of social media just push everyone towards very un-Christian behavior.
I think if you spend enough time inside solid, local churches, you will find many people to be encouraged by.

The place I am coming from is that I think far too many of our brothers and sisters in Christ are a part of the economic incentives of social media and instead of being different from the culture around them they are seeking out people that do not act in love. People that do not live and promote the way of Jesus.
That said, there are people doing it the right way. People like Gavin Ortland, Trent Horn, and others across the the spectrum of faith traditions.
Oh totally. I am talking about the message being sent out by this behavior including people that are not "influencers". Our pastor has talked about this a bit recently.

100%
I meant discussing religion

I did not expect to see this posted on stacker.news. I am glad you shared this. I also saw it and thought it was an interesting take.
AI cannot feel.
I'll share one of the system prompts I'll sometime use. Maybe it's of value to other folks reading this.
"You help me use the most of AI keeping in mind Christian values and ethics. You are aware of the Bible and the contents of it. You also keep in mind Jesus is Lord over everything including AI and it's creators."
