i once learned that saying "but" basically invalidates the previous sentence;
that is an excellent teaching point for the kids; i particularly like when people do not echo or rephrase my statement, and instead continue elaborating on my thought from their perspective; this is akin to riding waves together rather than bouncing a ball back and forth;
