**Saturday 9AM**
It’s a chilly Saturday morning in Warsaw, and I don’t want to get out of bed.
This is not because of the hangover; it’s because I feel like a failure.

The first day of Bitcoin FilmFest was a whirlwind of workshops, panels and running between stages. The pitch competition did not go my way. Another ‘pitching rabbit’ (an actual experienced film-maker) was selected to win the €3,000 of funding.

Rather than get up and search for coffee, I replay the scenes in my head.
_What could I have done differently? Will investors ever believe in me: I’m just a writer with no contacts in the industry. Do I have what it takes to produce a film?_

Eventually, I haul myself out of bed and walk to Amondo, the festival’s morning HQ (and technically, the smallest cinema in Europe). Upon arrival, I find Bitcoin psychonaut Ioni Appelberg holding court in front of around a dozen enraptured disciples. Soon, the conversation spills out to the street to free up space for more workshops.

I attend a talk on film funding, then pay for coffee using bitcoin. I see familiar faces from the two previous nights. We compare notes on Friday night and check the day’s schedule. The morning clouds burn off, and things feel a little brighter.

The afternoon session begins just a few blocks away in the towering Palace of Culture and Science. My role in today's proceedings is to present my freedom fiction project, [21 Futures[(https:21futures.com), on the community stage. Other presentations range from rap videos and advice on finding jobs in bitcoin to hosting ‘Bitcoin Walks’. This is how we are fixing the culture.

**Saturday 8PM**
I feel a tap on my shoulder. ‘Excuse me, Mr. Philip. Your car is waiting. The Producers’ Dinner is starting soon’.

What? Me, a producer? I’ve been taking part in some panels and talks, but I assumed my benefits as a guest were limited to a comped ticket and generous goodie bag.

Soon, I am sharing a taxi with a Dubai-based journalist, a Colombian director, and the cypherpunk sponsor of the pitch competition I didn’t win.

The pierogies I dreamed of earlier that day somehow manifest (happy endings do exist), and we enjoy a raucous dinner including obligatory slivovitz.

**Sunday 2AM**
The last few hours of blur include a bracing city-bike ride in a crew of nine attendees back to the Palace of Culture, chatting with a fellow bitcoin meetup organiser, and vaguely promising to attend a weekend rave with a crew of Polish artists and musicians on the outskirts of London.

I leave the party while it’s still in full swing. In five hours, I have to wake up to complete my Run for Hal in Marshal Edward Rydz-Śmigły Park.

**Thursday 9PM**
The festival kicks off in Samo Centrum on Pizza Day.
I arrive in a taxi straight from a cramped flight (fix the airlines!), having not eaten for around ten hours.

The infectious sounds of softly spoken Aussie bitrocker Roger9000 pound into the damp night. I’m three beers in, being presented by the organisers to attendees like a (very tall) show pony. I try to explain more about my books, my publishing connections, my short film.

When I search for the food I ordered an hour ago, I find it has been given away. The stern-faced Polish pizza maker shrugs. ‘You not here.’

I’m so hungry I could cry (six hours of Ryanair can do that to a man). And then, a heroic Czech pleb donates half a pizza to me.
_Side note: this same heroic pleb accidentally locked me out of my film-funds while trying to fix a wallet bug on Sunday night._

I step out into the rain. Roger9000 reminds us we should have laser eyes well past 100k. I take a bite of pizza and life tastes good.

**The Films**
Side events, artists, late nights, and pitcher’s regret is all well and good, but what of the films?

My highlights included Golden Rabbit winner _No More Inflation_ — a moving narrative with interviews from two dozen economists, visionaries, and inflation survivors.

_Hotel Bitcoin_, was a surprisingly funny comedy romp about a group of idiots who happen across a valuable laptop.

_Revolución Bitcoin_ — an approachable and thorough documentary aimed to bring greater adoption in the Spanish-speaking world.

And, as a short-fiction guy, I enjoyed the short films _The Man Who Wouldn’t Cry_, a visit to New York’s only Somali restaurant in _Finding Home_.

**Sunday 7PM**
The award ceremony has just finished. I head to Amondo for the final time to pay for mojitos in bitcoin and say goodbye to newly made friends. I feel like I’ve met almost everyone in attendance. Are you going to BTC Prague?!? we ask as we part ways.

Of course, the best thing about any festival is the people, and BFF25 had a cast of characters worthy of any art house flick:

- The bright-eyed and confident frontwoman of the metal band Scardust
- A nostr-native artist selling his intricate canvases to the highest zapper
- A dreadlocked DJ who wears a pair of flying goggles on his head at all times
- An affable British filmmaker explaining the virtues of the word ‘chucklesome’
- A Duracell-powered organiser who seems to know every song, person, film, book, and guest at the festival.

Warsaw itself feels like it has a role to play, too. Birdsong and green parks contrast the foreboding Communist-era architecture. The weather changes faster than my mood — heavy greys transform to bright sunshine. The roads around the venue close on Sunday for a political rally. And there we are in the middle, watching our bitcoin films.

**Tuesday 10AM**
I’m at home now, squinting at my email inbox and piles of washing, wondering when the hell I’ll find time. The festival Telegram group is still buzzing with activity. Side events like martial arts tutorials, trips to a shooting range, boat tours. 5AM photos of street graffiti, lost and found items, and people asking ‘is anyone still around?’

This was not just a film festival. BFF is truly a celebration of culture — Art. Books. Comedy. Music. Video. Talk. Connection.

All this pure signal has lifted my spirits so much that despite me being a newbie filmmaker, armed only with a biro, a couple of powerpoints and a Geyser fund page, I know I will succeed in my mission. It turns out you can just film things.

You may have attended bitcoin conferences before — you know, the ones with ‘fireside chats’, VIP areas, and overpriced merch. Bitcoin FilmFest is a moment in time. We are fixing the culture, year after year, until art can flourish again.

As fellow author Aaron Koenig commented during a panel session, ‘In twenty years, we won’t be drawing laser eyes and singing about honey badgers. Our grandchildren won’t understand the change we went through.’

Canadian Krysten MacEachern, 30, took her daughter Evelyn, 7, to attend the annual Bershike Hathaway convention. The two will listen to advice from mega-investor Warren Buffett together. Krysten traveled with her entire family from the small town of Smithers, where she lives, with a population of 5,000, to Omaha, Nebraska, United States. There were three flights.

Krysten considers the conference an important experience for her daughter. She and her husband have a long-term plan to purchase a Class A share of Buffett’s company for each of their four daughters. The stock is worth about $800,000. Today, the family owns one Class A share.

Buffett said tariffs could be used as an act of war and made his stance on Trump's policy clear: "Trade should not be a weapon." He expressed concern about tensions with other countries: "I don't think it's a good idea to have a world where some countries say 'we won' while some have nuclear weapons. We want a prosperous world, and it's not going to happen at our expense."



Why does Berkshire Hathaway have record cash?

The manager closed 2024 with a record cash position of US$ 334 billion. Buffett explains that
“We are in an extremely opportunistic business, it would be nice if we had at least four opportunities every day, but this does not happen. Soon we will be bombarded with opportunities, but it is very unlikely that this will happen tomorrow, just as it should not take 50 years.”



Why does Buffett buy stocks and not real estate?

An investor asked the “Oracle of Ohama” why he bought stocks instead of real estate. He responded by saying that “the time it takes to make a deal in real estate compared to doing something better with stocks is incomparable. Buying a property is a huge decision and the negotiations are time-consuming, if you want to buy or sell a stock, you do it in five seconds. It’s a totally different game and requires different skills to understand the joys of it.”


Buffett believes the US is undergoing a transformation, but the economy will remain strong
In the face of what some are calling a crisis in the American economy, Buffett reiterated his confidence in the resilience of the United States. He said that the country has already gone through many changes, citing the Great Recession and the development of the atomic bomb, and will continue to change. “We have built our society on promises that we have always delivered. The luckiest day in my life was when I was born, because I was born in the United States.”

“We don’t make decisions based on quarterly or annual impact”

Buffett shows more of his long-term investment philosophy when commenting on the recent devaluation of the dollar: “We don’t make decisions based on the quarterly or annual impact, what matters is where we will be in five years.”


“We do not want to invest in countries with significant chances of inflation getting out of control”

Buffett comments on the possibility of investing in Mongolia and says the country needs to build a reputation for being business-friendly and currency-conscious.

In a proverb-like response, Buffett advises a young female investor to walk alongside people she admires. “You won’t always make the right decisions, but your life will progress in the right direction if you hang out with people you admire and who make you want to be a better person.”


“What happened in the last 40 days is nothing”

When asked whether the recent period of volatility has created opportunities for Berkshire, Warren Buffett was blunt and said no. “What’s happened in the last 40 days is nothing. Berkshire has already fallen 50% three times since we bought it, even though there was no fundamental problem. If people think there’s been a big change because their stock has fallen 15%, they need a new investment philosophy. In 20 years we’re probably going to have another period that’s considered unprecedented.”


According to Warren Buffett: “It’s a terrible environment to be in if you’re scared by the downside and excited by the upside. People have emotions, that’s normal, but they need to let them go when investing.”


How will autonomous vehicles change the insurance industry?

Ajit Jain says that the number of accidents will fall, but the cost of repairs should increase as cars gain more on-board technology: “it is still an open question how these numbers will interact”. Buffett points out that all sectors are undergoing changes and says he does not know how the transformations will occur in this segment, but jokes: “it is no fun to play golf if you are going to hit every hole on the first try”.




“We are no longer competitive,” says insurance vice president

Jain says Berkshire Hathaway has suffered from competition from private equity firms in the insurance sector in recent years. “We used to do a lot of things in this segment, but in the last three or four years, I don’t think we closed a single deal.”

The executive, however, considered that the private equity strategy uses more leverage, a risky strategy that “works as long as the economy is doing very well”. He also points out that “there is always the danger that regulators will get angry and this will end in tears.”



Berkshire: Profits fall 14% and cash hits record in Q1 25

Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway's profits fell 14% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2025 to $9.64 billion, and revenue fell slightly to $89.73 billion. The results were released this Saturday (3) at the company's annual conference. Check out the full data in the report.

An investor asked the mega-investor this question, but left without a direct answer. I won't say it's a good ***Thursday*** night football matchup but it's football on a ***Thursday*** night.

Great response to our Bowl game challenge. We even had some unfamiliar names making picks so hopefully that indicates the population of SN stackers and Stacker Sports window shoppers is growing. 

It turns out the NBA still plays games on normal courts that don't fall under the in-season tournament brand. Sadly, I watched the Raptors participate in one of these novel events last night. It did not go well for the Raptors. When can we begin the way to early NBA trade deadline talk?

Even more depressing than the Raptors performance last night was the big trade in MLB. Juan Soto, one of the best hitters in baseball is now a New York Yankee. That will be a scary Yankees lineup when everyone is healthy, which won't be often. Maybe this move swings the baseball offseason into high gear. I am still holding out hope that in mere days I will be able to boast about the Blue Jays signing Ohtani, or rage post about the Jays not signing Ohtani. 

Should be a good night for sports. We have in-season tournament semifinals (Go Pelicans), a healthy slate of NHL games (we are all Senators fans tonight- maybe except @kr) and TNF. I won't say it's a good Thursday night football matchup but it's football on a Thursday night.

The high-stakes summit, meant to signal unity, instead laid bare deep fractures among member states, with economic caution and geopolitical bravado locked in a tense standoff.

Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever threw cold water on the idea of raiding $227 billion in frozen Russian assets to bankroll Kyiv’s fight. “Those pushing to grab this cash need to wake up to the fallout,” he warned, pointing to the risk of a global financial tremor. His words underscore a growing unease: what happens when you rattle the cage of market trust?  

On one side, a bloc of nations clamors to redirect Moscow’s immobilized funds into Ukraine’s war chest. On the other, heavyweights like Germany and France are sounding the alarm over legal quicksand and economic blowback. Hungary, meanwhile, threw a wrench in the works, reportedly stonewalling a joint EU stance on Ukraine—further proof the bloc’s seams are splitting.  

The deadlock comes as Europe grapples with a broader reality check. The recent sell-off of European bonds, sparking a sharp spike in yields, could possibly be cooling the war fever of the continent’s globalist hawks neocons. Seizing Russian assets as loan collateral could be the final straw, shredding confidence in the rules that keep markets steady. For now, the EU’s grand plans remain just that—plans, stalled by cold, hard pragmatism.
