I’m developing and maintaining a small FOSS application. Here are a couple of things that come to my mind:

• Lack of funding: Some applications may not get funding or grants at all. For example, I tried to apply for an OpenSats grant and got rejected. Totally legit, don’t get me wrong. But a question that rises is “Who is going to pay for what I’m doing?”.
  In my opinion, user should start thinking about value-4-value. Apps are free to use, but if you are using the application you should give something back.
  I am the first one not doing this, and I should be doing it more, by the way.
• No users: if a dev sees that no one is using the app, he will just stop building.
  Users should start appreciating publicly the work done by the devs of app they are constantly using, otherwise he would just think no one cares about it.
• Better alternatives: Being FOSS a free market, better alternatives could pop-up. A dev could decide to join the better application and let the current one die.
• Getting Bored: FOSS is full of stuff to do and devs can get bored easily.

You’re right, let’s call them in a more correct way as collectivists. This is more accurate.
