The Boys of Summer
I know we got a small preview last week but today is the real deal. It's opening day for MLB.
Along with the Super Bowl, this is my favourite sporting day of the year.
It is the unofficial ushering away of winter and ringing in of spring and begins the 162 game grind that is the Major League Baseball season and as a bonus ends the dreadfully long spring training preseason. What's not to love?
For the past few years my son and I do full standings and playoff predictions prior to the season beginning and after the season determine who got the most correct. The winner gets to title their predictions the following season as "MLB Facts" and the loser has to title their subsequent predictions as "MLB Fiction". Last year was the first year my son beat me. Damn you Blue Jays for making me pick with my heart instead of my head.
So I present to you a snippet from 2024 MLB Fiction:
  • Your division winners will be as follows: Baltimore Orioles, Minnesota Twins, Houston Astros, Atlanta Braves, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers
  • For the first time in the last 5 years the Tampa Bay Rays won't make the playoffs
  • The defending champion Texas Rangers also won't make the playoffs
  • 3 teams from the AL East and NL West will make the playoffs
  • The Dodgers will not win the World Series
I will be doing a post from the @themadnessking account (which will need a new name once March madness is over) with the rules for an MLB Survivor pool later today.
Please feel free to share your 2024 MLB "facts or fiction" and enjoy opening day if you are watching.
Sats for all, GR
The Mets will not lose today. Guaranteed. Take it to the bank.

I can't believe MLB tv is making me watch the Brewers and the Mets instead of the Phillies and Braves. Mets needs some hits.
reply
I think that's because New York is a real city.

Looks like a beautiful day for baseball. Mets are going to need a 9th inning rally here though.
reply
One hit on opening day. Mets have a good opening day record, too. Maybe this is a good sign.
reply
Can't believe he dug that out

161-1 still in play.
reply
Just 161 more rain outs away from a perfect season.

Survivor knows football, Survivor knows basketball, Survivor knows baseball.

Time begins today!

Unfamiliar with this book. I need to get this for my dad for father's day.
Growing up my mom had a little sign hanging in our dining room that said "we now interrupt this marriage to bring you the baseball season".
reply
Oh, your dad's in for a treat! Boswell was one of the great baseball writers of all time (still alive, but retired a couple of years ago). If you watched Ken Burns's Baseball, he's one of the big folks speaking in it.
reply
Great. I have watched Ken Burns' Baseball but it's been some years now.
reply
Just because 😜
