Round 2 game 1 of the Stanley Cup playoffs, Canucks playing at home versus the offensive powerhouse Oilers. I expected a high energy, high scoring game, and I got exactly what I expected. The Oilers got off to a quick start with a power play goal to stun the home crowd early in the first period. Then the Oilers proceeded to score another one roughly15 minutes into the first period, ending the first leading 2-0. The Canucks answered with a goal early in the second to cut down the lead, but the Oilers went on the score back to back goals 45 seconds apart to make the game 4-1 with just under 7 minutes to play in the second. At that point, many might think that the game was over, but this Canucks team would not give up. The Canucks continued to fight hard and would eventually make it 4-2 with 3 minutes to play in the second.
Down 4-2 entering the third, the Canucks continue to fight hard. With 12 minutes left to play in the game, a double penalty was called, which resulted in 4 on 4 play. The Canucks caught a break when Nugent-Hopkins made a shot over Silovs' left shoulder which Silovs did not see the puck, but the goalie's best friend (goal posts) saves the day. The following play off of that miss led of a Canucks offensive push and a goal by Miller to make it a 1 point game.
The magic moment(s) came when the Canucks scored their back to back goals 39 seconds apart to take the lead with just over 5 minutes to play. The Canucks would hold onto the lead and take game 1 over the Oilers.
Many hockey experts/analysts have picked the Oilers over the Canucks, even though the Canucks beat them 4 games to 0 in the regular season. Now the Canucks are 5-0 against the Oilers this season. Maybe this come back win will make them reconsider and rethink their pick? I would love for the Canucks to show these "experts" that they picked wrong.
Anyways, here's the youtube video of the comeback in the third. Go Canucks go!
It was a very exciting game. Not a defensive battle to be sure. Nice comeback by the Canucks.
