There is no other way to look at it but that Johnson pulled a Pelosi and strong armed the HELLLLLL out of the HFC bending them to his will. By the time I went to sleep at midnight last night I was still very iffy on if the bill would pass. Johnson put all the pressure on the Nay’s by opening up the vote. It was a bold move and holy shit if he didn't execute it and call all of their bluffs.
For a person who was called a weak Speaker… he is certainly flipping that idea on its head! Final votes for the bill should be starting within the next hour or so.

Could you explain what you mean by "opening up the vote" and how that put pressure on them? Do you mean that he held it open really long and that allowed them to just feel pressure over time to change their vote?

For sure! Typically votes that House Leadership knows would fail they never "open the vote" which means is when they officially start voting on a bill. By opening it Speaker Johnson was going to have to either fall in line or explain to the people who elected them why they tanked one of the flagship parts of this Congress.
So it puts pressure on them not only from the people back on in their districts who voted them into office under passing this type of legislation but also from other House Members, Senate Members, and the White House. Pelosi did the same thing in 2021 with President Biden's Build Back Better legislation.

I think he's looking at the fact that he doesn't have the numbers to tank it and so why piss off Trump and the rest of the Republicans. Fitzpatrick at least has some reason for it being from a purple district and needing to pick and choose his battles.

Looks like Fitzpatrick was the only republican who voted no on the rules vote. It also looks like they've been at it literally all night. Hakim Jeffries has been going for like 5+ hours.
