I think I first learned about Bitcoin back in 2017. Back then, I didn't give it much thought; it was more of a curiosity. In Cuba, where I lived, some pyramid schemes using Bitcoin started popping up, and I, like many others, got involved without really knowing what I was getting into.
I remember a coworker mining BTC using the company's servers—those were the wild days. I also tried CryptoTab, and since I didn't know anything about self-custody, I lost everything.
Later, I logged into some Telegram bots that gave you Dogecoin for completing tasks. I managed to accumulate over 3,000 DOGE... and, yes, I lost those too. Then Elon came along with his tweets, Dogecoin went up to almost 70 cents, and all I could do was laugh to keep from crying.
Then I discovered Pionex, a platform with automated bots that buy and sell. I created one, and it's still there to this day, trading BTC for almost three years. But even then, I wasn't taking it entirely seriously.
It wasn't until the birth of my second child (whom I've talked about here on other occasions) that something clicked. It was as if everything before had been just background noise. Suddenly, I realized I couldn't continue depending on anything or anyone. I had to learn, take control, and build something solid, real, and lasting.
Bitcoin stopped being an experiment or a gamble. It became a responsibility. And also, a hope.

I learned about BTC from the Gawker article about Silk Road in summer of 2011. I got very lucky since I was already an avid consumer of Austrian economics, technology and libertarian politics so I was able to immediately recognize what a huge leap it was.

How great to have known about BTC back then, although sometimes I've thought and looked back on my life, and maybe if I had had that money I earned back then and lost, my marriage wouldn't have been the same, maybe the money would have corrupted me due to my immaturity, so many things, God knows what it does, definitely, "we are not late, but just in time," as Gandalf says.

This is definitely a healthy way to think about it!

Finding Stacker.news I'd say. Prior to that my understanding about Bitcoin was just superficial.

I learned about it from the Rollo McFloogle and Slappy Jones show.

I've never heard of it, it's a bit difficult for me to understand English, but I'm going to try to listen to it on Spotify. If you had a YouTube channel it would be great, because then I can add subtitles.

I don't know that i'd recommend listening to it. i generally find them intelligent and interesting, but it's more like two guys talking about small stuff than it is a serious podcast...I just like their name.

I love obscure libertarian podcasts, most of the ones I used to listen to are discontinued now. Timeline Earth is one that hooked me a long time ago.

Wow, how great it must feel to see that what you found and bet on back then was all right, surely we're not too late yet...!!

When I first heard of it in 2017 I was excited as for many years before then (at least since 'Occupy') I had felt the fiat banks have gained too much power and misused fiat powers by using fiat debt issuance to inflate non productive asset prices. Making the first Bitcoin transfer was mind blowing. It was an exciting time and initially I experimented with other 'crypto' but soon realised they were all DINO, thanks the The Bitcoin Standards excellent explaination of the dynamic of Bitcoin and money in general. Bitcoin is now Occupying Wall st. Fuck the banks.

Your personal story is incredible, which led you to focus on Bitcoin and the store of value it represents. I learned about Bitcoin thanks to a friend, after emigrating from my country Venezuela, and settling down, he began to talk to me about Bitcoin and I am currently his pupil. Thank you for sharing your story.
