Gaining some understanding of Bitcoin usually gets people thinking more about what you don't need. Some even take this to an extreme like selling their chairs or living on instant noodles.
For me personally I think it's good to be frugal and make good use of what you have. I'm ok with finding furniture or toys off the street, wearing second hand clothes and driving an old car.
However there are a few things I won't skimp on like food or education. Paying for high quality meat & vegetables feels like an investment for a long life.
Some of our friends are really taking frugality to an extreme. I think it's going too far and I might have to cut them loose as you can't really do anything interesting with them. They aren't exactly poor either, they will just sacrifice a lot to save money.
So how tight is too tight? Cutting open the tube of toothpaste and scraping the skerricks? Eating cheap carbs on special cause it's expired? Or liking a post and zapping 1 sat?
i think it differs from person to person, skimping on good food and things isn't a good idea imo because good food and sleep are what let us perform better, no matter the field.
Some people love being ultra frugal though, like a hobby, couponing etc, so for them it's probably almost fun

Yeah it seems for some people, getting good deals and not getting ripped off is the game in and of itself. The monetary value of their time spent is actually of secondary concern

I don't partake in this frugality and sacrifice.
That is a scarcity mindset and it makes you expect to have "not enough".

So you just make sure you're earning enough to be able to buy or do whatever it is you please?
reply
Yes, I expect abundance.

I think it's good to be frugal in some areas but not in all. Don't cut corners when it comes to the health and safety of your family (for example- if you need new brakes on your car- get new brakes). That doesn't mean you never eat a crappy meal because it is cheap but that shouldn't be the norm.
Also education for the kids. We homeschool our kids so whatever tools they need (devices, books, stuff for experiments, subscriptions etc) we don't think twice about. And each kid gets at least one extra curricular activity.

We're about to start homeschooling too. I have the attitude that whatever they're interested in, I'll need to support. Depending on their interests this could get expensive but I think it will be well worth it.

Ideally, the line for me is when the effort expended to save exceeds what I know I would expend to earn more. It's easy to get stuck in saving or earning mode though.
As far as categories of saving, I agree that health and education are the last categories you want to begin sacrificing.

Spend with care.
Not with fear.
Because in the end, the richest part of life isn’t the balance in your wallet it’s the stories you can tell.
And you don’t tell many when you’re home scraping skerricks from a tube..

Agree. Spending time how you wish is real wealth.
