I understood that the shutdown resulted from a disagreement on healthcare spending between the republicans and democrats. For long enough, we witnessed both sides digging in, appealing to their respective electorates, and emboldened enough to not compromise.
Yet, it ended. So obviously, at least one side compromised, or both did. But given their initial positions that led to the shutdown, what's an objective assessment of who compromised more? And which side was bluffing without any real cards?
Politics in its simplistic form is a game of give and take, and the paramount interest of the politicians is to give in just enough that it doesn't affect his or her ability to win the next election. In essence - they all came to a compromise into to achieve their individual objective.
