Typefaces are such a rabbit hole that I haven't developed much of an opinion on them. But if google is using this one, when you use it you can at least be sure that it'll be familiar enough that no one will notice it.
Thus seems pretty cool. Looks like they made a pretty versatile font - versatile I'm the sense that you can make it look a lot of different ways.

Jobs had a master in typography. It is indeed a rabbit hole that goes deepen into meaning and psychology, communication and visual language. All the major brands, at some stage, have a personalized "corporate font".
