The vendor in charge of cleaning our eco-pond came to render his services today. Shook his hand for the first time and was soon engrossed in a discussion regarding the rampant otter problem in Singapore. Apparently, the problem has worsened. There are about a thousand wild otters cruising to their heart’s content in Singapore — and in Sentosa. They swim through waterways and pipes and drains, emerging in public and private spaces alike, terrorizing (and killing) our poor fishes. I wasn’t that lucky, but students have seen nature in vivid display as they witness how otters eat fishes at our seemingly inconspicuous eco-pond.
In addition, crocodiles were introduced in Sungei Buloh in a valiant attempt to contain the otters. Apparently, the otters breed faster than the crocodiles can consume them. The latest measure aimed at curbing the otter population is to stop them from breeding in the first place. I wait with bated breath for further updates from my fish pond guy.
My work life is spiced up through unplanted moments like this.
Crocodile-eating otters is intense. I did not know that they did this.
Have your children ever read the Redwall series by Brian Jacques? Otters tend to be heroes in that, but perhaps it was all a vile propaganda effort.
Loved Redwall series as a kid. Met Brian Jacques and he signed my copy!
I loved Redwall as a kid, but my own children don't seem to be into it.
First time I tried to read it to my kids, none of them liked it. But then a couple years later, they really got into reading it on their own. Funny how kids are.
I can't remember too much about it. Maybe it's something that you have to get invested in.
I didn't like Wheel of Time series first time I read it. But I tried again recently and starting to enjoy it now.
The fish seeing is very nice and could enjoy the calm.
Ah, is that otter eating a Koi? Aren't those pretty expensive?
