My son’s Mathematics Department subscribed to KooBits, a popular private online learning platform for all its students. Intrigued by the free education KooBits offered, I resolved to check it out to ascertain its level of usefulness for my son.

First of all, KooBits Maths doesn’t require much commitment on the part of students. I helped my son log in — and it seemed that what awaited him was a ten-question Daily Challenge, with the questions being ranked in terms of ascending order for difficulty. Since he was a first grader, some of the questions were laughably simple as they didn’t require him to count beyond ten. I quite appreciated the questions on number bonds though. Through these questions, he obtained a more holistic understanding of numbers.

Parents will love that worked solutions are available in the event that their child gets a question wrong and requires an explanation.

After completing the Daily Challenge, your child might be motivated to participate in the multiplayer challenge. My son religiously competes against three different opponents every day. I think he likes it better than the Daily Challenge since he relishes the adrenaline rush that comes with competing with a peer.

Completing the Daily Challenge and multiplayer challenge won’t take up much time. Perhaps ten minutes tops. This means that your child can play some of the exciting Brain Games. My son’s favourite feature beyond any doubt. He likes to play Sushi Maths the most as he strives to do mental sums while the seconds are ticking down.

By all accounts, we are enjoying his free subscription to KooBits Maths. Make sure you utilise this free resource if your school subscribes to it too. Only 36 P1 students in my son’s primary school have used it so far — such a pity not to consolidate mathematical concepts for free!

Seems like a cool platform. My boys both use Khan Academy and while they don't complain, it doesn't look as fun as KooBits.

Is this an activity that your son does in time at home or is it an activity st school?

I have vaguely heard of Khan Academy. Let me try that out and get back to you. Thanks! Been thinking of finding a platform for English.

It’s meant for parents to do Maths with their offspring at home. Quite ingenious of the school to get the parents involved, I must say. SGD$6000 (I went to ask the Head of Department of Maths for the pricing) for 1000+ students for a year’s subscription — an expense worth taking on!
