Just in my time running a node ( 4 months) I have a couple of things I noticed coming from the server hosting side. My first concern is with down time and how it can affect the quality of your node. My second concern is with reliability and how alot use old and under powered hardware that can cause loss of your node (also downtime). My last concern comes from these two issues and how running and operating a lightning node properly takes alot more time and proper investment in hardware.
In the end this is my opinion in the short time ive ran a node, but I have set myself up to be fairly profitable and well routed in this time. This came from most of the year learning about nodes, implementing it in a high fee environment, and becoming well connected with good channels. Id like to hear other experience in running nodes and how they use them/ problems encountered.
Yes, if you're running a routing node for profit, invest in good hardware. Think about a RAID setup for your disk, and UPS for power, potentially a backup internet connection too.
If you're running a hobby node, make sure you have channel backups regularly in case your node dies, so you can recover the funds (not the channels).
