Learn enough about how Bitcoin works to come up with and use a cold storage option that doesn't exist in books and marketing brochures and is unique to you and your situation
reply
Nah, use something simple. Learn over time

Agree, something so unique/complex it doesn't exist in books is a 100% certain way to ensure it will not be recovered when you die, have a stroke, or are otherwise incapacitated; and there is a good chance you forget or otherwise lock yourself out of them. More coins are lost due to overly complex setups than theft by far.
reply
ABSOLUTELY. I'm very glad someone early on talked me out of letting my brain go down a rabbit hole of paranoid complexity. I think I was going to like buy an old laptop and re-install linux after every use, and import my seed phrase every time-- a seed that I had split and buried in a nearby park and another remote location.
reply
Treat it as if it’s $1M because some day it could be.
reply
I will choose Coldcard + Sparrow
reply
Jade and Green if they're more comfortable with mobile. Jade and Sparrow if they have a laptop or desktop (better opsec to never take any cold storage software out of the house).
Jade is the best balance of price, UX and flexibility for newcomers.

Nunchuk and tap signer.
reply
vastly underrated. A collaborative multisig with Nunchuk and tapsigners is a great way to do self custody with/for a newbie and give them a big cushion to F*** things up without losing coins. You can be an Uncle Jim backup without having the ability to unilaterally move their funds.

That is the threshold. I like these numbers so far!
COLDCARD + Sparrow

What. De. Fuck, man. Where's the Bitbox02?!
reply
Trezor + other wallet because:
  • Coldcard probably too complex for most newish users
  • Ledger's declining reputation
  • Trezor still ubiquitous, lot's of videos and resources. Plus very easy UI
reply
Don´t know why you all go over Bitbox02, swiss made :)
reply
Obviously don't use Ledger anymore.
Also Trezor keeps getting hacked too much. The other day I got an email from them saying their support portal was compromised.
So really it's Coldcard and Passport wallet you should be considering. Maybe Bitbox02 too.
reply
BitBox02 BTC only

Blockstream Jade + Sparrow

I picked the majority vote of Coldcard and Sparrow, but a lot depends on your friend. I've recently onboarded two people in my family to Jade and Green wallet on their phone. It is much easier to show how it works for the new user.
I also like using SeedSigner and Passport with Sparrow.
reply
Too much too soon is never a good strategy. I wouldn't even mention hardware wallets at first. Chances are they are going to decide to switch up their setup once they research for themselves anyways. Just get them setup with something simple that does the job and has medium protection. I love that i came into bitcoin through Electrum. Still recommend it to people

Ledger+Sparrow? Isn't that the easiest? If someone literally doesn't know what wallet to use, they should use the easiest.
reply
While for $10k it's not worth it, for large stacks Liana is also underrated
reply
Coldcard + Sparrow. There isn't even close to a second best option imho. Full stop. Ledger is spying on you and can extract your seed remotely. Trezor One an expert can easily forcibly extract the seed in minutes, if that. Stateless signers border on a scam unless you are so strapped for cash you literally cannot afford anything else. Having QR codes lying around with all of your wallet info is insane from a security perspective. If you constantly have to handle and input your seed, eventually someone will be able to steal it if they're patient and you're doxed.

come on, no they can't.

Ledger customer service explicitly admitted this in a tweet that they have since deleted. https://www.reddit.com/r/ledgerwallet/comments/13l1e7a/why_did_ledger_delete_the_tweet/

Ledger nano was revealed to have backdoor access a few months ago

Really depends on the person IMO. Myself I'd use cold card and sparrow. But that's not the most user friendly, and for someone like my parents I may tell them ledger live, or possibly even custodial if it's a small amount and they haven't got comfortable with it yet
reply
Adding to my other comment. Bitkey is also not a bad option for someone less comfortable with keys.
reply
Border wallet + backups. Maybe shamir secret splits if you want to give to some thrust ones with instructions for inheritance purposes.
reply
No way to say without more info. For some 10k are life savings, for others a weekend trip.
