Todays post is about drafts.
I was listening to a 49ers podcast yesterday and one of the hosts was in Mobile Alabama for the Senior Bowl. Personally, I am much more interested in Super Bowl talk at this point but I understand that especially in the NFL the draft is a big deal. I can't seem to get interested though, especially so far in advance. Sure, I have a sense of who the top picks will be and some notable names from College football but I have seen some guys doing entire mock drafts for their team. I have tried using those draft simulators in the past where you can select a team and make all their picks but I am just doing it for fun- no clue who I am picking.
49ers have 11 picks in the draft this year. I couldn't possibly come up with 11 players I would want them to draft. I have a good sense of what positions they should target but what player they should pick at pick 180 is beyond me. (good idea for a post close to the draft- what positions do you want your team to target- must commit this to memory)
I have been getting somewhat interested in this year's NBA draft with the Raptors recent precipitous drop in the standings but it more relates to whether they will keep their protected first round pick for this year that they traded away to the Spurs. Picking up the win last night didn't help their cause but it was an impressive win.
How close do you guys follow the Drafts in various sports? Do you have a player or a set of players you hope your team drafts? Do you participate in mock drafts or draft watch parties? Should we do some sort of contest for the NFL and NBA drafts?
Sats for all, GR
Hey GR Happy to finally talk sports!
I’m based in Tanzania but an avid sports fan. Grew in the UK so the draft system was a little alien to me. However, I’ve really enjoyed it, but it does seem that in the NBA the players get a lot more control to their destination if they become an elite player. The whole team up culture has in my opinion changed the outlook of the draft. I think the most notable was in recent times was Luka and Tray. Lonzo and Tatum. I mean those decisions have shaped franchises. Of course wemby now has so much media and advertising about him you can’t miss every bounce he does. But at the end of the day like Dame… loyalty only takes you so far. On the other side of 30 and with that kind of leverage there is a handful of superstars that start and stay in one team.
Clearly I know more about NBA than NFL. But great topic and look forward to discussing more

Thanks for joining the discussion. If we did a draft contest or draft lottery contest would you be interested in joining?

Hey @grayruby I think Wembanyama was a big deal draft wise, probably bigger than next year’s draft , don t you think? Open for a contest :)

Definitely. The "experts" seem to think this draft class is weak. I think certain players come along that bring a lot of attention to certain draft classes as well. Probably will be the case in the NFL with Caleb Williams this year.
Any ideas for a draft contests?
Doing a lottery for the NBA draft lottery would be a neat idea. Maybe a 10,000 sat bounty and up to 14 players can play. We somehow randomly assign a team to each participant and the player whose assigned team wins the draft lottery wins the sats.
