Yes! That's how I got my first starter! It is so cool and old school. It's not too hard to make your own starter though.
Honestly, that group is gonna outlive Bitcoin. Post-apocalypse peeps gonna be sending smoke signals like "hey bring me some sourdough starter"

Honestly, I have a bunch of ferments going on in the kitchen all the time. I imagine I can just do my own wild yeast, but it just seemed cool to keep that group going.

I've done it before. I went through a bread baking phase in college. There isn't much difference relative to using commercial yeast other than a little more patience.
