I would say this should be required reading for all first-time faculty and new TAs, but the shift to the author's religious examples would immediately disqualify him by the institutions assigning the reading and by many of the readers.
Before the current culture war, there was a war on religion at universities. The outcome? Campuses are now Godless yet full of gods.

Good point. pluralism is the new normal. first in the universities, then the schools, and now the culture. with no common culture, there are only subcultures that feel threatened. And in many ways, they all are. culture is sort of a zero-sum game, even though I wish it wasn't.
