We finished watching the US/Netflix adaptation last night, and it really was just as good as promised (maybe even better -- Liam Cunningham's character is every bit as fun and deep as Tyrion Lannister, in spite of the offhand comment implying otherwise). Will wait a couple of weeks to check out the Tencent/Peacock version.
I still recommend the books a lot, of course, but like the article's author, I recognize that plot, not characters, is the strength of the novels.
This has me so excited! I just finished the series a couple of weeks ago. One of my favorite series, if not outright favorite, of all time. Didn't know it was going to be a series until I was starting the third one. I can't wait to watch it, but march madness is taking up my time.

I watched an episode of the Chinese version. I'm not sure how well it was received in China, but if it was received well it's impressive how different our TV tastes are.

I started watching it the other night but I fell asleep. I don't think that had anything to do with the quality of the show. I was just tired. So, I will give it another shot in the coming days.

Been watching the past few nights. 6 episodes in now. Good show.

Watching it now. I like it so far

I read the first book but not the others. I watched the first 3 episodes of the Netflix series, and it seemed to me it covered most of Book 1.
Is the Netflix series (8 episodes) covering all books?
I do not want to look into episode content since I do not want to spoil it, and was not able to search it quickly. I might just read the books first before watching the rest.
reply
Nope -- it's parts of books 1 and 2 (since some events are shuffled around).

It's quite something indeed, I have been enjoying it so-far, too.

Also finished it and was not impressed. It started out very good but quickly went down hill.
I haven't read the books so I don't know how they compare but the story has a bunch of weird plot holes and many of the things they do just straight up don't make any sense.
It doesn't even come close to something like Severance IMO

Severance was probably my favorite series of the last few years, so it's a high bar. That said, I obviously enjoyed 3BP more than you. There are things that aren't perfect (the forced dramatic tension involving keeping Saul in the dark in the final episode springs to mind), but I really enjoyed the ride and the performances. It's impossible when watching something adapted from source material not to be informed by it, so I don't know how that impacted my viewing.
