Okay so what are y'alls feelings about this? I have reservations because its my BTC but it also adds a new dimension to the space that is interesting and I could see being really attractive to some people

This is not Bitcoin. This is just some shitcoin named "core". Another coin with an intentionally unclear name as an attempt to scam.
Staking is impossible on Bitcoin and will always be impossible. Anyone that says otherwise is lying to you.

I thought this was some sort of layer 2 on top of Bitcoin at first which also confused me but yeah it seems odd that its a new chain but is powered by Bitcoin? I honestly do not really understand it still and was wondering if someone could hash out what this even was

Don't give the scammers your brain power dammit. Be extremely skeptical of ANY new release or feature. Typically its just a scam to get your money.
