Also, it's interesting to see what is considered upper-middle class in the US... 100k dollar/year would correspond to a much higher income bracket in many "developed" countries of the world.

I think when you make more, you care less of how much you make. It's just human nature. This is corresponding to persons living in the United States. I'm sure it's the same in any other country, :).

Yeah, there is a threshold up to which people all they (have to) care about is money. After that, the gains in terms of how it improves your life become marginal.
Unfortunately, the amount of people who are below that threshold is ever-increasing in some developed countries. The biggest culprit I see for that is the culture of debt that benefits the already rich more than the poor. There are of course many more reasons, but I'm no expert in the complexity of human sciences (incl. economics), so I'll leave it at that.
