I also think people have been demoralized so much that they can't see something that is actually hopeful. They assume it cant succeed because they are so used to being a slave. 

Maybe their point is that they do not want to see other people achieve financial freedom and sovereignty, or maybe they still believe that one is not responsible for oneself but rather the government!
