If you are looking for a great documentary to watch this weekend, The Century of Self made a big impact on me. It is one of those documentaries that really makes you stop and think. You can watch it here:
It's an older BBC documentary, I know its graining and starts a bit slow, but give it a moment. It's fascinating.
The Century of the Self, is a profound exploration of how Freudian psychoanalysis has been used to shape societies throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. The documentary reveals how the theories of Sigmund Freud and his nephew, Edward Bernays, have been instrumental in shaping modern consumerism, politics, and social relations.
The series begins by examining the work of Edward Bernays, a pioneer in the field of public relations. Bernays, influenced by his uncle's psychoanalytic theories, recognized the power of manipulating the unconscious mind to shape behavior. He applied these principles to advertising, politics, and social engineering, demonstrating how the subconscious desires of individuals could be harnessed to promote products, ideologies, and social norms.
One of the central themes explored in The Century of the Self is the commodification of the self. Bernays and other influential figures realized that by focusing on individual desires and anxieties, they could create a market for products and services that promised fulfillment and happiness. This shift from a needs-based to a desires-based economy led to the rise of consumerism and the creation of a culture centered around the pursuit of personal gratification.
The documentary also delves into the ways in which psychoanalytic ideas have been used to manipulate political discourse. By understanding the underlying fears and desires of the electorate, politicians have been able to craft messages that resonate on an emotional level, rather than appealing to reason and logic. This has led to a decline in substantive political debate and a rise in populist rhetoric that plays on people's anxieties and prejudices.
The documentary serves as a timely reminder of the importance of critical thinking. By understanding the techniques used to manipulate our thoughts and behaviors, we can become more aware consumers and citizens, and resist the forces that seek to control our lives.
This is a fantastic doco I recommended it to people all the time but thus far nobody I've told to has actually watched it 😅
Happy to see it mentioned here and I give a strong thumbs up.
I love the fact that you can't really put the content of the series into a box either. People across the political spectrum claim this film as theirs, but it just doesn't have an agenda in that way. Curtis has mentioned this himself in some interviews about it.
I think he made some other good stuff too, I've been meaning to watch the one about "hyperreality" in post-Soviet Russia.
Here's a link to Curtis' Wikipedia page if anyone is interested, to find more of his work. But if you haven't watched Century yet, I'd recommend doing they before dipping into any info about him... Best to watch that series with a blank slate and no preconceptions!

I hadn't heard of his other stuff, but now I am looking through it. I'll check "hyperreality". Just realized he put something out in September 2023 called "Hypernormalisation".
The description sounds interesting:
Our world is strange, and often fake and corrupt, but how did we get here? We live in a time of great uncertainty and confusion. Events keep happening that seem inexplicable and out of control. Donald Trump, Brexit, the War in Syria, the endless migrant crisis, random bomb attacks. And those who are supposed to be in power are paralysed - they have no idea what to do.
This film is the epic story of how we got to this strange place. It explains not only why these chaotic events are happening - but also why we, and our politicians, cannot understand them.
It shows that what has happened is that all of us in the West - not just the politicians and the journalists and the experts, but we ourselves - have retreated into a simplified, and often completely fake version of the world. But because it is all around us we accept it as normal.
But there is another world outside. Forces that politicians tried to forget and bury forty years ago - that then festered and mutated - but which are now turning on us with a vengeful fury. Piercing though the wall of our fake world.

Very nice summary. I checked the YouTube video and it's over 3 hours so maybe I'll watch it later.
About the subject of psychoanalysis and propaganda the Vedas discuss this very deeply. The whole philosophy of the mind, self and Self is covered in the Bhagavad Gita.
Basically this is the Age of Quarrel or Kali Yuga (Age, era or time). This Age of Quarrel started 5,000 years ago and from that point we are degenerating for 10,000 years. Eventually the average human will live to 30 at best. This age is full of confusion and this confusion ranges from retarded to highly sophisticated but, and this is a big but, both the sophisticated and the retarded are materialists. That is the worship of the material world and the desire to be God by ignoring the Creator of everything. It's a mental illness.
Central planning is atheistic in that is not the disbelief in God but the desire to usurp God. Similarly to the concept of Ahimsa (non-violence) doesn't deny violence but wishes to remove it. The Anti philosophy rhetoric is strong in both the analytical and the sensual. Both ignore the achievements of a hundred thousand years of modern humans in favor of humanism which is elevating mankind to cattle and creators.
I'll try to watch this sometime when I have more time.
Thank you for posting this.

I like reading your thoughts here, I sense this could be a great post of its own, or even a series of posts. Was just chatting with my gf earlier today about how much I like the gita and how I want to read more of the upanishads.

Its all one, gigantic and well organized psyop designed to make everyone weak and super easy to manipulate...
No wonder Jung has been attacked and made smaller by these despicable creatures since way back then!
Each individual and also culture has to deprogram & search out the sane, strong and still somewhat accessible roots that still are available...

Critical thinking is always important. Have you noticed that the quality of material is so different now from back then? The low quality stuff we get now is so colorful, yet has no substance.
reply
Totally! Today's stuff all has quick cuts because they are worried about losing the viewer's attention. Back then, it was easier to keep ppl's attention.

And we are yet to add to the list of the 7 wonders of the world. But I think bitcoin makes into the list.
Fiat leads to (monetary then price) inflation, inflation leads to low quality productions, and low quality products encourages animalistic behaviors and lack meaning in life.
