“Social media is doing harm to our kids and I’m calling time on it,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said.
The legislation will be introduced in Parliament during its final two weeks in session this year, which begin on Nov. 18. The age limit would take effect 12 months after the law is passed, Albanese told reporters.
The platforms including X, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook would need to use that year to work out how to exclude Australian children younger than 16.
“I’ve spoken to thousands of parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles. They, like me, are worried sick about the safety of our kids online,” Albanese said.
The proposal comes as governments around the world are wrestling with how to supervise young people's use of technologies like smartphones and social media.
Social media platforms would be penalized for breaching the age limit, but under-age children and their parents would not.
“The onus will be on social media platforms to demonstrate they are taking reasonable steps to prevent access. The onus won’t be on parents or young people,” Albanese said.
Antigone Davis, head of safety at Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, said the company would respect any age limitations the government wants to introduce.
WTF!! Albanese, those kids won't vote for you and your party.
16 years is a bit less. Australia should ban it for 25 years old also. Or it should be banned until the education isn't completed. ;)
The real problem with such bans is that they will promote the adoption than be able to ban. However thos slso means that Social Media in Australia will be KYCed from now.

Why only in Australia? They need a proof of address from every user in the world to confirm they're not in Australia and therefore exempt.

While I do think social media and these other social media like gaming platforms do harm to young people, this is absurd gov overreach.

Government can't ban it. It's just another way of making think that politicians, especially in higher roles, do think about your family. If they centralised social media, we now have nodte, if a 16 year old already don't know what's VPN which comes inbuilt in most of the phones.

Hmmmmm....Only if there was some decentralized alternative. https://nostr.com/

There must be someone who should inform this to Albanese.

KYC. Backdoor KYC for Internet my friends. That's the goal.
The solution is rather simple. Don't buy your kids a smart phone. Keep your computer for home in public room. Teach them how to use the Internet before you just hand them a device. Its simple. Its not easy. Daddy government will do it for you.
Just another case of... there ought to be a law!

This is good and bad at the same time

I agree that social media is a powerful alienation machine, but I think it is unfeasible for several reasons... mainly the pressure exerted by these billion-dollar companies, which will have solid arguments to block this law.
