I mean just looking at the basic numbers the Department of Education has been a complete failure. Going from Top 5 to depending on who you ask 20 - 31st in K-12 education. We have and still do fall behind other countries in Math and Science so I am not sure why we burn the money with no reward.
Edit:
Thats not to say there shouldn't be some small Agency that does more or less routine checks on what we are teaching kids to make sure we aren't teaching them stupid stuff. I would rather us increase funding to the National Science Foundation which not only does research but brings in teachers to teach the discoveries than pay for the huge ass Department of Education.

Who is the reason for terrible education? Bad teachers? Bad administrators? Bad parents? Bad students?
reply

We spend all the money in the bureaucracy and so nothing is left for the teachers. Teachers should be making a bunch more then they do.

Bad teachers are over paid

If kids are being taught stupid things the parents need to know. Lack of transparency is a big problem.
Education used to be combined with health and welfare or HEW until 1979
Department of energy was also established in 1979

The US Department of Energy? It was formed in ‘77 prior to that it was the Federal Energy Administration. They added the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) which was just the R&D side of Energy

Apologies for the wrong year
It was created under Carter to address the energy crisis in the 1970s

It was there under the name of Federal Energy Administration lol they renamed when they gave it the nuclear stuff from the Atomic Commission that the NRC didn’t take

Federal energy administration was not a cabinet position
Department of Energy is part of the cabinet

Dude it was literally part of the renaming process and giving Congress more sway 😂 that’s the reason for Cabinet level it gives the Senate a check on the President

The FEA was tasked with managing fuel allocation, pricing regulation, and energy data collection and analysis

I love Friedman and I love the ending even more! I don't want to be a dictator, and if we can't convince the people, then we've failed. We should never use violence against individuals.
That's the spirit!
Individual rights are the most important thing to defend!
People can be jerks and idiots, but they have the right to be an idiot!
Do not force the world to do what it does not want to do!

Edit:
14000 employees, 93000 contractors
There is no way 99 percent are devoted to research

You understand the National Lab system and all the people involved in that are researchers and this is where the money goes....
lmao does it make you feel better if I say 80% because the Forester building is full of people crunching numbers for data. I guess in IG of DOE can be counted against but again the vast majority are researchers sure they have people that keep the place clean as well you can chalk up as well

The NNSA part is such a sliver… just to cover what you would essentially be erasing is… Super Computing, Fracking, Horizontal Drilling, batteries, and a bunch of other stuff like chips that run the device you are currently using…
Seems to me to be a terrible awful idea. Unless you just want China to run things… then it would be great

Wiki tells me that our boy Friedman helped design the income tax we have today.
Not sure if that's a great fit for @DOGE. Maybe.

There are solid investigations into this. Cut the biggest waste/fraud first:

Unfortunately I don't think Elon is smart enough to cut what makes sense first. He's the kind of guy that cuts for populist reasons or what gives him the most headlines first.
