I prefer Debian.

Ubuntu is "bastardized" Debian with too many bells and whistles imho... that no one really wants. Nice try but If one wants easy there is always that other evil MacOS...lol at least now on a nice hardware (M4) :-)

always liked Lubuntu & Mate for this reason. Debian feels too bare for me, but Ubuntu too bloated.

Yes Debian is the best, although Ubuntu is perhaps easier for people new to Linux.
I would never go back to the corporate spyshitware that are Microsoft and Apple.

Agreed, but between these two evils, MacOS still wins, if you run it right (no iCloud BS and its services) and stick to basic software, it's not that bad for a daily driver or developer workstation, for those that do sound or video editing I don't think you can find a better alternative. I'm not praising them, I dislike apple as well, but at least Darwin is solid OS and $shit just works, that oughtta mean something for a simple user. Give credit where the credit is due. The software and hardware combo was always a decent solution. IBM MVS, Solaris, and now Apple.... they abuse their power for sure, but they always will if you let them.... :-)

Don't expect freedom and integrity to be convenient- it rarely is.

It looks like all of the problems come up in scripting languages. Maybe the compilers are a problem. There should be nothing giving out root to various programs without express permission from the administrator of the machine.
It is startling to see that this has been a problem in Ubuntu for 10 years! They are pretty alert to security problems and fix them right away. Makes me wonder about backdoors, now!

so that's why I saw an update on needrestart yesterday..the rule to have least software installed to be less vulnerable prevails.
