Hello Stackers!

It's Thursday so that means it's Throwback Thursday Time!

I'm going to give you a bunch of clues and I want you to guess the year and comment a song from that year. Highest ranked correct answer (by "top") gets the bounty. Entries close prior to "Feel Good Friday" Post.

🚨A guess without a correct song doesn't win, both your guess and the song must be from the correct year.🚨

Here we go!

I slept on the strokes for a long time. And when their album came out in 2020, called "The New Abnormal" and I became a huge fan. Anyone ever listen to the singers other project, the Voidz. Wild stuff. Super creative.

reply

Absolutely! This is one of my favourites of theirs aswell.

This track was never meant to be called chop suey.

The tracks original name was "suicide" but the record label made them change it, they allegedly came up with the chop suey because that was what serj had ordered for lunch... This is why you can hear at the beginning of the recording "roll suicide".

reply

Great factoid. I didn't know that. Chop Suey is such a great name. Way better than calling it suicide. When you get to the frantic guitar riff prior to the bridge "father" part it feels kind of chaotic like a chop suey dish.

reply

I actually really like that representation and interpretation you got there. These dudes are very clever musicians so perhaps they may have even intended that. I always had it as a sort of mental chaos and descent into madness struggling to understand the feelings of abandonment and dismay. But I love the parallels, I hadn't thought of that at all!

reply

It's a success, thanks for sharing it.

So good. When Toxicity came out, it seemed like the only thing all my friends were listening to for a while. Great year for music. Those were the days....

Is This It is the debut album by American rock band the Strokes. Recorded at Transporterraum Studio in New York City with producer Gordon Raphael, the album was first released on July 30, 2001, in Australia on RCA Records. It peaked at number two on the UK singles chart and number 33 on the US Billboard 200, achieving platinum status in several countries. It's an incredible album that I was able to enjoy to the fullest. Long Live Music.

reply

Well someone already picked a song from this album, but Lateralus deserves two in here. I pick Schism by Tool. I will never forget the moment when I first heard the first single played on the radio. I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing. It changed me forever. This whole album is a masterpiece.

Shall we do it? Let's do it...

What time signature is schizm in 🀣🀣

reply

Probably a weird one. Danny Carey is an alien.

reply

It's become a running joke really for this track specifically as they alternate various time signatures throughout, sometimes in 5/8 sometimes in 7/8. It's a complicated mess of time signatures which is what makes it such an interesting track.

This is from Google: Bars 1–2: 5.4, 4.4 Bars after 1–2: Alternating 5.8 and 7.8 First interlude: Alternating 6.8 and 7.8 Verse: Alternating 5.8 and 7.8 Next section: 4 bars of 6.4, then 1 bar of 11.8 Middle section: 3 bars of 6.8, then 1 bar of 9.8 "Between supposed lovers...": 3 bars of 9.8, 10.8, and 9.8, played twice Final riff: 8.8

Ya see what I mean... Absolute complicated mess of time signatures. Awesome fun though.

reply

So good. I think a lot of people struggle to enjoy tool be it's too complicated..I like music that takes a lot of work for me to integrate and feel. Tool is the best for that.

reply

It can be a bit much and a little overwhelming at first but once you find the intricacies it's really really interesting music.

She's really got such a great voice. Spot on and great submission.

On August 25, 2001, at the age of 22, Aaliyah died in a plane crash in the Bahamas along with eight others on board, when the overloaded aircraft she was traveling in crashed shortly after takeoff. I share one of her successes:

If we're doing 2001, this is the song I've got to go with.

It's Been Awhile - StaindIt's Been Awhile - Staind

reply

It's been a while!

Can't hear that sentence and not sing it in staind style.

reply

I'd be lying if I said I didn't do the same sometimes!

reply

It's not the only one either... There's loads of tracks that sit rent free in my head that gets triggered by someone saying a phrase.

reply

They can get triggered at the worst times too! πŸ˜… Like an usher at a formal classical concert saying walk this way! πŸ˜‚ It was a bit hard to keep a straight face.

reply

Classic.
