It seems like the prospects of DOGE-fueled layoffs have reached to a level where it's almost accepted that Trump wouldn't hesitate at all to replace them with loyalist. Now Politico's Opinion desk has come up with the same after most of US media has already accepted that a great ‘Feeling of dread’ has set in among federal workers.
Undoubtedly, our government, including the civil service, needs significant reform. But reclassifying federal jobs and placing partisan loyalists in government positions is not the way to do it. It would only return us to the spoils system — where cronyism reigns, and roles that should be apolitical instead serve a political agenda.
What do you think about these prospects of layoffs? Are we going to see them or it's just all exaggerated?
TBH, in my country bureaucrates aren't threatened like this at all with a change of government.
They just whiffed on their first opportunity to furlough federal workers.
I think they will fail in directly laying people off, but will succeed in indirectly pushing people to look for work elsewhere.
People often choose to work for the government, because they are risk averse. The current environment feels risky, so some will look for safer jobs.

Trump wants to cut the size of government bureaucracy. He doesn’t want to replace; he wants to displace or eliminate positions
Edit: civil service today is not based on merit and is very political and partisan
