As someone who wants nothing to do with altcoins, I definitely do not want cowboy credits, which is why, last week, I set my wallet settings to this:
But they keep coming in. Yesterday, my balance of cowboy credits was under 100. Today it is over 300. Is there a way to turn them off completely? I assume I get them in two circumstances: (1) someone tried to zap me but my wallet didn't give them an invoice, so they sent me cowboy credits instead (2) someone had no sats to zap me with so they sent me cowboy credits instead.
I would greatly prefer my CC balance to always be 0 and, in the above two circumstances, for this to happen: (1) if someone tries to zap me but my wallet doesn't give them an invoice, don't let them send me cowboy credits, just show them an error: "Sorry, there was an error zapping this user. Please try again later." (2) if someone has no sats to zap me with so they try to send me cowboy credits instead, show them an error: "Sorry, this user does not accept altcoins. Please try sending them sats instead."
Is there any way to eliminate cowboy credits completely and ensure my CC balance never grows and is always 0? If I have no decent way to achieve this, I will just stop using Stacker News. Cowboy credits are, by far, the worst thing to ever happen to this website. They pretty much turn it into altcoin garbage of the "I love bitcoin, please send it to me and I'll give you these worthless tokens instead" variety.
There’s no way to do this automatically. You can donate them to the rewards pool manually though. Posting and commenting also gets rid of them.

Aw that’s sad but it sounds like you’ll be happier elsewhere, so I won’t deny you that.

Will you add a way to do this automatically? Not "make it so I can automatically donate them" but rather "make it so I can turn on an option that never lets people send them to me in the first place"

Not in the near future. We have a lot to do and we’re still exploring ways they can improve the experience for people that aren’t technical nor threatening to leave if we don’t do what they want.

I understand and I will.
btw I think you associating CCs with altcoins is extremely rude. It makes me sad. You must either think so poorly of me that you think it's a fair characterization or are being inflammatory to manipulate me.
Either way, I'm sorry to lose your feet. I still like you and enjoyed your posts and comments.

He compared Kraken and Strike to Nazi/SS troops who refused to obey orders
it was a fair analogy because exaggerations are not distortions

I don’t think it’s fair to think these are the only reasons @supertestnet might think this. I don’t think he’s trying to manipulate you or thinks any differently of you. In my opinion what he’s asking for is not that unreasonable. I would not go as far as to say cc are shitcoins but I can see how one might not want them. Either way, interesting conversation and good luck with everything moving forward.

I guess it’s a fine line between arguing your point and manipulation. Hard to tell in a written post. Either way Instead of arguing about whether it’s manipulation or not I would much prefer to discuss his point. It seems reasonable as a user to be able disable receiving cc’s. Sender just receives an error message. Only a few people would do this but why not at least have the option for people that prefer only bitcoin like @supertestnet
first you are a crybaby then you resort to extortion and blackmail

Other than too much to otherwise work on is than any other reason why someone couldn’t have the option @supertestnet describes to turn off ccs for his account?
What are the other ways being discussed to improve user experience?

I'll buy them off you.

I know this is not the best solution for you, but just saying it out. How about having a CC giveaway whenever the time suits you ?
You could just zap those CCs to people who you think added value.
This way it’s a win-win. You have 0 CCS which you want. And other people who appreciate CCs get some. And as a bonus, it encourages engagement on the platform.

@k00b I am wondering, I just tried to zap him 21 sats (my default amount) for his post. He received 21 CCs according to the details. However I would have expected it to be deduced from my wallet, then converted it into CCs if he could not receive it because of fees. It could be nice to have a choice in the settings to decide which means of payment we want to prioritize. Each time I zap posts or comments I would expect it to be sats since it is peer to peer, or at least sats deduced from my wallet and converted to CCs if the peer did set up a wallet but the payment failed for whatever reason (fees, peer not online, etc). However each time I create a post or comment I would prefer to use CCs since it is website related.

Hey @supertestnet. It would be a huge loss for SN if you left. You are one of the few people I follow here. Your contributions and energy that you bring to the wider development effort is not to be understated. My account has accumulated both CCs (somehow) and sats, and I am not clear if I have a choice which to zap, so in this case, I supported you directly and I would like to continue participating (real time or not) in your workshops. I know value when I see it, let me know where you land, and I will be there.

I like the idea big being able to refuse cc’s if a user wants but I think you are going about this in a crappy way. They just rolled out a week and a half ago. It seems lame you are threatening to leave over this.
It’s not an altcoin it’s a like having a credit on Amazon it spends the same on the platform but can’t be taken out. Only cc’s are better because when you spend them they go into the rewards pool mixer and come out as sats.
reply
You can send all your cowboy credits to me. Set your "send credits for zaps below" to X+1 where X is your number of CC, then zap this post your CC. I will happily help you keep your CC balance at zero.
reply
No. You have no right to say "No". 😂
reply
you will end up using them when posting so don't worry about them. think of them as free stacker sats
reply
If you only want to receive sats via zaps, yet you still sometimes get CCs, why is it so bad that you’d leave the platform? Can’t you just ignore the CCs? I understand why you would prefer sats, but why is it so critical to have a balance of 0?

I think it would be cool to get rid of CC and just do zapping. Newbies would have to take a few steps before joining but since its only a few clicks I don't really see the problem.

Great to have this take precisely when my wallet stops zapping from my attached wallet and instead drain my post/comment balance instead.
Fantastic. New error to figure out (#850716)
Nothing in the error logs. 502 error page on SN wallet page.

Do you have attached wallet ? There's no way to refuse CCs, but you've given me a good idea for cases like yours. There could be the possibility to forwarding CCs to the daily rewards.

Yes
There's no way to refuse CCs
Why not? Why force them upon us? Why not let us choose to always reject them, and if a user has chosen that, just show the sender an error?

That seems far worse than just making them optional for those who don't want them. I don't want someone else to receive these credits for me. I want the sender to be unable to send them to me.

I agree, it should be possible!
you must have a problem with your receive wallet. i zapped your comment with sats but CCs were sent. There are no errors in the logs.
I want the sender to be unable to send them to me.
